Sheet Porch Hammock

Hanging Porch Bed

Love taking a nap outside? Maybe you've noticed that, if you nap in the yard, whether it be on a blanket, a lounger, or a hammock, the bugs can be brutal. For some reason, you just don't see quite as many bugs under a covered porch. That's why an area of your porch is the perfect place to set up a unique hammock. Not like the usual type, where you may or may not be successful when climbing in and out, a porch hammock is made slightly different. No more will you have to have perfect balance to get into it, worry about being tossed onto the ground, or have to struggle to climb out. A porch hammock is super easy to make and will soon become the most comfortable place, at your house, for an outdoor nap. Want company? The hammock can definitely hold more than one person.

Take a flat sheet you own and you can easily turn it into the new hammock. The sheet can be a twin, queen, or king size. If you have no sheet use a blanket, piece of fabric, a net, or even a tarp piece. To get started, fold the sheet or material in half, width-ways.

Purchase a grommet kit that features grommets at least 1-½" in diameter. You can find the grommets at a home improvement place, craft store, or fabric store. Follow the directions to pound a grommet into each of the four corners of the folded sheet. Cut the fabric out from inside the grommet circles and you're ready to hang the new hammock.

On the ceiling of the porch, screw in four "c" hooks - one at each corner of the bed. It can be helpful to measure the sheet and then mark the four corners on the ceiling, just to make sure they all align. Have a length of chain cut for each corner, to reach from the ceiling, down to the sheet. The sheet should be at least 25" off the ground, but can be even higher, if desired. Hang one length of chain from each "c" hook.

Connect an "s" hook to each of the dangling chains. It's safer if you take pliers and clamp the "s" hooks shut. Hook the other end of each "s" hook to each grommet, and clamp them shut. That's it!

The quick and easy porch hammock is so very comfortable and you have the roof already in place to block the sun. You'll discover that having a nap in the new hammock is the most restful sleep you'll get - outside, anyway.
