Shep, the Real Joe Cool, and His Funny Dog Ways

Shamontiel
By nature, Labrador Retrievers are usually categorized as playful K9s. German Shepherds are known for being protective animals. So the mix of German Shepherd and Labrador Retriever made my 13-year-old dog, Shep, even more entertaining. At one point, people could walk by and he'd be bored with the idea of them around so he'd ignore them completely. But if they got too close to someone in our family, the German Shepherd kicked in. However, what I remember most about Shep was how cool he was at being humorous.

Of course our family still cracks up about the time that Shep waited for my father to finish grilling a steak, turned his back and at lightning speed, he hopped the counter and ran out the back door to eat my father's meal. Then there was the time my brother and I decided we were going to put him in hip hop gear-including the sunglasses, a sideways cap and a chain, and he didn't even fight us when we did it. We took our photos and he went on his merry way. Our family was pushed around plenty of times with him shoving his nose under our hands or smacking us with his big, hairy tail. And we're convinced he knocked down our Christmas trees each year for sport, not by accident because as soon as he did it, he ran downstairs knowing that's where he'd be sent anyway.

But what amused me most was how he'd look at you when you did something weird or that he flat out refused to do. Anytime someone did something odd, he'd flop his head to the side like he was saying in dog language, "You've got issues." It was a mix of the floppy ears that he acquired from being a Labrador Retriever to the beautiful shade of brown and black from being a German Shepherd that made it even cuter-especially when he was a puppy. Every time he cocked his head to the side, people couldn't help but laugh. And when he did that, you knew he was having no parts of whatever it was you wanted him to do. And after he did that head cocking, he simply turned and walked away.

Shep was that classic brand of comedy-the dog that never tried too hard, Joe Cool from the "Peanuts."

I was terrified of dogs when Shep came home. My mother picked him out of a litter because the mother chewed his tail off because he looked too much like the German Shepherd father.

By the way, Alyce, my computer doesn't have the ad covering up the article and I'm at home now. But my laptop has a wide screen and I'm on a Mac at work. I wonder does the size of the computer screen have anything to do with the ad size.

I died laughing about that one because the look on my father's face was a cross between mad, entertained, and sad he had to cook a new one.

Another ad covering text, but enjoyed what I read. Having had some pet's stealing people food from counters, can just picture that BBQ scene and smile as if I were there.
