Sheriff Joe Arpaio Tops Republican Hopefuls in Governor Poll

Arpaio Remains Popular in Arizona Despite Pressure from Obama Administration

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio leads Republican candidates in the Arizona governor's race. A poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports shows the controversial Arpaio leads Republican hopefuls to hang onto the Arizona governorship. In a head to head match-up, Joe Arpaio led Arizona attorney general Terry Goddard 51% to 39%. The 12 point lead was the only lead among Republican hopefuls.

The recent decisions by President Obama's Homeland Security Department to strip Sheriff Arpaio apparently have not affected the Sheriff's popularity among Arizona voters. On October 16, the Department of Homeland Security announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement told Arpaio to stop using federal 287g regulations to arrest illegal immigrants who are not accused of serious crimes. Arpaio defiantly refused leading an anti-immigration sweep throughout Maricopa County the following day.

Sheriff Arpaio said on Fox News Glenn Beck, "I'm still going to enforce the state laws and I'm going to enforce federal laws."

In a Rasmussen Reports poll taken in May, Arizona voters supported Sheriff Joe Arpaio's policies by a 58% majority, saying they had a positive impact on the state. Arpaio's defiance of Department of Homeland Security orders was found by the new poll to be widely supported by Arizonians by a 64% to 29% margin.

Incumbent Governor Jan Brewer trails Terry Goddard by nine points - 44% to 35%. Arizona State Treasurer Dean Martin is nearly tied with Goddard at a 40% to 38% margin. Of the four candidates polled, only Governor Jan Brewer has announced her candidacy. Governor Brewer has a poor approval rating, at only 39%.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio may just step in and run for the office. Arpaio has a chance to leave the tension filled relationship with the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors behind him and find an opportunity to work for the state of Arizona. Arpaio has toyed with the idea of running for governor for the past three election cycles, but has always decided to remain as the Maricopa County Sheriff. Arpaio has even touted his popularity in comparison with Senator John McCain.

Arpaio's Twitter account was busy today, Sheriff Arpaio responded to the poll, "If ever there was a time to consider a run, now may be the time..."

Another message stated, "I cannot ignore the results of this latest Rasmussen poll about the possibility of me entering the (Arizona) Governor's race for 2010."

The poll seems emblematic of a larger movement throughout the country, with more conservative candidates outpolling or strongly pushing more liberal candidates in swing states and districts. Arizona Senator John McCain is also fending off a primary opponent of his own party who is more conservative, while Senator McCain is more moderate. Governor Brewer may find herself in the same position if Joe Arpaio decides to enter the race.

David - Please provide reputable news links for these stories - not blogs. Also, are you blaming the recession on the Sheriff or e-verify? Really - it's not the corruption in DC!

In 1996 a group of Ario's Deputies Torture/Murdered a man for spitting, they held a wet towell around his heaqd and tased him over twenty times until he would finally stop beggin for his life and DIE for them!
In court they testified under oath that this was not part of thier training, however I was told different, and infact they were a specially trained GOON SQUAD called when ever some one spit!

Yes Lets Run a Coward that likes to Yell at Women , teaches his deputies to Torture, Murder , Stesl , Rape, and every other crime in the book for Republican Governor of Arizona, this is only fitting Because the Republican Party's E-verify Law and Deportation Program Matches this the worst Re-cesion in U.S. History month for month!

Since January 2008, the Sate of Arizona has approx: 30% less TAX BASE than as counted for the last twenty years as CITIZEN's by the U.S. Cencus Bureau, what this means for you slow people, is that now the State Government has a (2) Billion Dollar Budget Shortfall, aprox: 30% and now has to Reduce the matching amount of our State Government, for which the Fed's. will have to follow!
This should have been done the day E-verify Passed ,Jan. 2008, and is now inevitable!

In addition the vacated 30% of dwellings have not only Crashed our Banking System, and put a massive hole in the "Real Estate Bubble" , but this 30% e-xcess of dwellings has made us 30%
