Sherwin-Williams Office Color

Calming Grays for a Productive Environment

Beth Inman
I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel like I spend more of my time in my office than I do at home. For this very reason, I want my office to be a comfortable place, one that I don't mind spending several hours of each day in.

Creating a comfortable, yet productive space is not difficult. We are surrounded by color, and every color provokes something within us. My work is of a stressful nature and because of that I wanted to create a space than was calming to counter balance the stress. Soft colors are relaxing to my senses. I also did not want to bring too much color into my office and distract my senses.

I chose for my office, one of the neutral grays that are so popular right now. When choosing your wall color, be sure to take into consideration all the furnishings in the room. Desk colors as well as file cabinet colors should blend well with the wall color you choose. In my case, my carpeting is blue, gray and black and my file cabinets are gray.

When deciding on a paint color I accessed the Sherwin Williams data base for Cool Neutral Paint Colors.

Here you will find many shades of neutral gray that will allow us to blend both blue and greens. As you scroll through the colors, you will notice those that are heavier in greens and blues.

You will also need to take into account, the lighting in the room. If your room is bright, with plenty of outside lighting, you may want to consider a darker shade of gray. This will soften the lighting in the room and help diminish any light glare by absorbing the light.

If your room is on the darker side, you will of course need to choose from one of the lighter shades so that your light will reflect from the wall color, rather than be absorbed by it. A great neutral gray for a room with less lighting is Sherwin-Willams SW6071 Popular Gray

If you would like a little more gray pigment, yet still stay on the lighter side, Sherwin-Williams SW7043 Worldly Gray is a comfortable choice.

My office has a lot of outside light through two large windows. I will choose my colors from one of the darker grays with a blue undertone. For my office I chose Sherwin-Williams SW7669 Summit Gray

Ironically, this was a good choice as I am involved in the winter resort industry.

There are a great many paint choices available now. Don't limit yourself to white. Get out there and explore the world of color that surrounds you. Bring your favorite shades into your indoors environment. You will find that your well being will benefit from the infusion of calming colors in your workspace.
