Sheryl Crow is Back with Detours, An Album Worth the Wait

The Reviewer
Sheryl Crow is one of the most revered names in modern music. She is known for her incredible lyrics, vocal delivery and instrumentation. After a brief hiatus, Sheryl is back on the scene with her sixth studio album, Detours. Will Sheryl still have the magic to deliver hit records?

The first single off of Detours is Shine Over Babylon. The song definitely touches on issues that are relevant to the world today. The song is very issue heavy which is a good thing but it just lacks the commercial appeal to appeal to the masses.

The second single off of Detours is Love Is Free. The song is catchier than the first single. The instrumentation of the song is much happier and more uplifting in nature. The song is inspired by the floods in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, however you have to dig deep to find those lyrical metaphors.

The title track Detours is one of the strongest tracks on the album. The song is vintage Sheryl Crow with almost a tinge of country. The song is very catchy and strong musically.

Drunk With The Thought Of You is one of the more introspective songs on the album. The song sounds so personal and intimate as opposed to most songs out today.

Love Is All There Is, is a different sounding track. The song is very catchy but almost starts off with electric hip hop inspired drums which just throw the listener off. The rest of the song however is vintage Sheryl Crow with some elements of The Beatles thrown in.

Out Of Our Heads starts as almost frantic song. The song features a very up-tempo beat with vocals from Sheryl which do not seem to fit with the track. The song is one of the weaker efforts on the album.

Now That You're Gone is another solid track with its heavy bass line and Sheryl's soulful vocals.

Lullaby For Wyatt is a beautiful acoustic guitar driven ballad. The song is dedicated to her adopted son Wyatt. The song is one of the most peaceful and relaxing songs in recent memory. The song is just incredibly beautiful and well delivered.

Detours is a very solid album and was well worth the wait from Sheryl's last studio album. The songs all seem to fit with the general theme of the album beautifully. Overall, Detours gets 8 out of 10 stars. If you are a fan of Sheryl Crow make sure you pick up her album Detours when it is available in stores on February 5.
