She's Playing Herself: Beyonce Knowles Should Not Be Nominated for a Golden Globe

Artevia Wilborn
Beyonce Knowles is one of the few women honored by a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. Beyonce Knowles, former lead singer of Destiny's Child, Grammy Award-winning American R&B singer and songwriter, and all around celebrity may soon be able to add award-winning actress to her belt.

Knowles is being honored for her role in Dream Girls, a musical loosely based on Diana Ross's career, as Deanna Jones. Several critics have already deemed Dream Girls to be one of the best films of the year and point out the films potential to receive a possible Oscar nod.

At a time like this I feel compelled to ask, "What is wrong with the world?" Beyonce should not be getting any type of nomination. People, in case you have not noticed, Knowles is not acting; she's "acting" as herself.

Let's compare Beyonce Knowles and her Dream girls character, Deanna Jones. Deanna Jones is in a group originally named the Dreamettes. The members of the Dreamettes are three friends, there is the full-figured lead singer Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorrell Robinson. In real life Beyonce Knowles was in Destiny's Child, a group of four friends: Kelly Rowland, Beyonce Knowles, LeToya Luckett, and LaTavia Roberson.

The group's name is changed to The Dreams and the group's manager, is interested in Deena, an appoints Deena Jones as the lead singer instead of the heavier Effie. Similarly, Destiny's Child went through prior names like Girl's Tyme, The Dolls, Something Fresh, and Cliché. Also, Beyonce's father has always been the manager for Destiny's Child, and his impartiality in Beyonce's role as the Destiny's Child lead singer and his vested interest in Beyonce's future over the other group members has been questioned over the years.

With the new songs and a new more glamorous image The Dreams are transformed into a top selling group. However, the dejected Effie is insulted in being demoted to a backup singer and begins acting out, becoming even more unruly when the group manager begins dating Deena. Destiny's Child's sophomore album, The Writings on the Wall, propels the group into worldwide success. However, like Effie, group members LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson do not trust their manager. The girls begin to believe their manager and Beyonce's father, Matthew Knowles, is misappropriating their share of the group's profits, unfairly favors his daughter and was to much of a controlling force in the group.

When Effie does not turn up to rehearse for the Dreams's debut in Las Vegas the group's manager replaces Effie with his secretary, Michelle Morris (Sharon Leal). Effie is unaware of her removal, and arrives at the show at the same time as her replacement. In the same fashion, when LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson, file a law suit and attempt to split with manager Mathew Knowles they are unaware of their removal from Destiny's Child. The girls are replaced by Farrah Franklin, a girl who was in a Destiny's Child video, and Michell Williams. Farrah Franklin leaves Destiny's Child five months later.

Deanna Jones is propelled by the success of The Dreams and begins a solo career. Ironically, so is Beyonce Knowles, she launches her solo career in 2003 after the success of The Writings on the Wall and the Survivor album.

In 2005 "all" the members of the group decided to amicably split from Destiny's Child and pursue solo careers. Surprisingly, Beyonce is the only one to come out with a solo album after this split.

So as one ponders Knowles's role in Dream Girls it is impossible ignore the striking similarities in this fictional character and Beyonce's own life. So when reports surface that state Beyonce's reference to this acting role as the one that defines her acting abilities it is a comedic moment. Who is she kidding? Deanna Jones in many ways is Beyonce Knowles and vice versa. If she can actually delude movie critics into thinking otherwise by actually nominating her for professional awards then that will be her true acting role.

I read this article and I think you have a screw loose. I understand that this is your opinion but what the hell is wrong with you. there was a time when we as black women weren't even invited to be at award shows. Now we are there in full force. How about you start writing about how if little girls work hard and keep striving that they too can be like beyonce who became famous the hard way without a tv show. Help us lift up are little girls instead of pushing them down into the mud.

beyonce if you are reading this right now, you should read the others. you got it all. how many people can sing and act as she does. let the diva live her dream. she is so sweet for u to talk of her in that way. let her receive even the oscar, cuz i personally thinks she deserves one

I agree with you, Beyonce is a talented girl, but just because she can sing doesn't mean she can act. I also personally believe that Destiny's Child was Matthew Knowles' way of getting his daughter into the spotlight, and there was probably a reason why two of the members of Destiny's Child, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett wanted Matthew Knowles fired as their manager. Beyonce is such a Diana Ross.

Lastly, most people don't know how to act themselves well enough to act it on a movie screen. All the female voices were impressive and beautiful. Alot of great singers are in churches all over the place. Yet most of them are unpolished, or lacking in looks, acting ablity, and/or drive, desire, disipline, or detemination. In church you just sing for God and get a message across. This is a very different playing field. Yes there are some with everything and just never got that opportunity but it is not as common as people think.

Everyone thinks they can do this and that, and yet they can't even command attention at church, or school with only amatuers around. Talented people seem to think things are just going to happen to them and never seem to give all they can to learning new things about their talent. Famous people talented or not know this:... no matter how great they are there is always someone better. Sometimes they are bums on the street, sometimes they don't have the drive or desire to be famous, and yet some can't handle the rough critisims by non-fans, (such as yourselves) even the stupid comments. But doesn't mean people aren't talented. Especially incredible talent like Beyonce. Beyonce truly knows her voice and works hard on the songs she sings. In fact all the women were very natural, committed, and convencing to their roles in this movie. If you think you or your friends can do better, you guys should go and audition for something or go study your craft and see what instuctors have to say.

beyonce did a good job in dreamgirls i loved her role and i also love her. so listen i think that she should be nominated cuz she had to transfer into a different person to play deena jones.

Look people I know it may seem like I attacked your best friend but trust me I did not. None of what I said in this article reflects what I think or stated about Beyonce's willingness to do charity events, excellent talent as a singer, or her acting skills in the general sense. If you all read the takeaways you would all be able to read what I consider to be striking similarities between the real life Beyonce and the character Deena. My concern is that this whole rapper/actor, singer/actor period takes away from people who really dedicate their life to acting and can't sing so why should the opposite work?
