Shift Puzzle Platformer for iPod Touch, iPhone

Timothy Liu
Shift is a puzzle platformer created by Antony Lavelle and sold by Armor Games Inc. This game can be found in the App Store section of the iTunes Store.

There are two versions of this application. The full version was updated on August 2, 2009 and costs 99 cents at the iTunes Store. The latest version (currently version 1.1) includes improvements in speed, file size, and load time.

The other version of the game is titled Shift Lite and is a demo version of the full application. As with most demos, Shift Lite can be downloaded for free from the iTunes Store. The demo was last updated on August 3, 2009. The latest version (also currently version 1.1) includes improvements to game speed and stability, game file size, and additional new levels. The demo version, however, does not include the same number of levels as the full version, for obvious reasons.

Both versions of the game are compatible with the iPod Touch and the iPhone. Both also require OS 2.2.1 or later.

Game Background

You are subject 32763 and are currently being experimented on. Escape this black-and-white world that you are trapped in.

Gameplay

The objective of each stage in Shift is to reach the door. To control your character, use the left and right arrow keys. To jump, press both the left and right arrow keys. You can also touch the center of the screen to jump.

What is special about Shift is the ability to shift between the two worlds. To do this, simply click on the button at the top corners that says SHIFT. This will cause your game character to shift to the other world, which basically involves turning the screen upside down and changing the world that your game character occupies. For example, if you currently are moving around in a white background, pressing SHIFT will allow your character to move around in a black background.

Throughout the game, you will encounter obstacles that may or may not kill you. You may also need to collect keys to activate certain platforms in order to reach your destination, namely the door.

Double-clicking the screen will send you to an options page that will let you select how you would like to activate the Shift capability. There are three ways:
-tilt your device left or right
-tilt your device forward or backward
-click on the SHIFT button

In the options page, you may also toggle game music.

Game Review

Shift is a fun little puzzle platformer that is great for iPod Touch or iPhone users, especially those who find themselves with extra time on their hands to play games. With its many levels, Shift is sure to keep gamers of all kinds entertained. The music adds a nice, classy touch to the game.

Check out the demo version of Shift for free if you're unsure of this game. You'll probably end up buying the full version, and for its price, it will be well worth it!
