Shilpa Shetty picture of Indian beauty; I think most people in the world have now probably heard of Shilpa Shetty but up until a few weeks ago she was only really known by people in India and by her Bollywood films. When she entered the UK Celebrity Big Brother house in January 2007 most viewers in the UK had never heard of the Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, although she did come into the house with lots of cheers.

When we heard that she was a big star who had a massive entourage and servants I think we all thought she would be awful, but the opposite was true, she was found to be a very genuine, pleasant and caring person with great beauty, dignity and personality.

Everything was going smoothly in the Big Brother house until Jade Goody and her family arrived. For people who don't know who Jade is, she is famous for being in Big Brother 3 and not being very polite or very intelligent. She is also very loud and crude. The house was divided when she arrived as Big Brother had sent most of the celebrities into a Victorian "downstairs". They were acting as the servants to the other celebrities upstairs. Jade and Shilpa were "upstairs" along with Jermaine Jackson, Ken Russell, Jade's mum (Jackiey) and boyfriend (Jack). This task led to some arguments between Jade and Ken (he left the house), between Jackiey and Shilpa (Jackiey was unable to pronounce or attempt to pronounce Shilpa's name) and also between Jade and Shilpa and things just deteriorated from there. It ended up with Jade in a group with Jack Tweedy (her boyfriend), Jo O'Meara & Danielle Lloyd. The other group consisted of Shilpa, Jermaine Jackson & Dirk Benedict. Ian Watkins and Cleo Rocos tried to remain impartial.

There were many thing said by Jade and her group that were not very nice. In fact Big Brother and much of the worldwide press felt that these comments were possibly racist. The biggest row actually started over some stock cubes but escalated massively. During this row Jade continually swore at Shilpa while the others just sat there and laughed, although they made Shilpa Shetty hot and bothered she never lost her cool and refused to lower herself to their level.

Although some of the things Danielle and Jo said were perceived to be racist in my honest opinion I don't believe Jade was trying to be racist I think she was just being a bully, obviously I am not condoning bullying but I feel it is a lesser charge than racism. Whatever it was, there were 4 people ganging up nastily on one specific individual

This caused such a storm that thousands of people phoned Channel 4 (the company that shows Big Brother) and complained, it was the most complaints ever received for a TV program in the UK. This went further than the UK though as there were riots in India with people burning effigies and Gordon Brown MP (Chancellor to the Treasury) who happened to be in India at the time had lots of questions to answer regarding this incident. Questions were asked in Parliament and even the prime minister had to answer questions. Finally Carphone Warehouse who is the official sponsor to the Big Brother programme pulled their sponsorship of £3million.

The end result of all this is Jade Goody has had her perfume removed from shops, her autobiography cancelled and her TV show postponed. Danielle Lloyd has had her famous footballer boyfriend Teddy Sheringham finish with her and thrown out of his house & 2 modelling contracts cancelled. Jo O'Meara has had a concert cancelled that she was due to do.

Shilpa Shetty on the other hand won Celebrity Big Brother and has been inundated with offers of work. It looks like it all works out in the end.
