About the Museum of Natural History
The exhibits are all housed in a beautiful house built for Williams Scarbrough, the president and principal owner of Savannah Steamship Company. The house was used as a public school in the 1870, then abandon for a long period of time. Historic Savannah Foundation decided to restore the mansion in the 1970s. However, the art museum went through another period of abandonment, then once again restore to its present state by Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in 1996.
About the Museum Art
The model boat exhibit feature models of the world famous ships including the Titanic. We have all seen the Titanic movie now on display at art museum in Savannah is a model of the ship before that tragic night. Among the Titanic at the Maritime Museum is a vessel named City of Savannah. City of Savannah was built in 1877 in Chester, Pennsylvania by John Roach and Company. The Vessel was used to ship freight and passenger between Savannah, Boston and New York until it was destroyed by a hurricane. The Anne is another famous ship that sailed the seas back in the 1700s, carrying the first colonist to settle in Georgia. Within the museum art is a very important ship called The Steamship Savannah, this vessel is famous for being the first ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The Wander was used to import slaves illegally from Africa, this ship import over 400 slaves to Jekyll Island, GA
