Shontelle Shontelligence Early Album Review

Can Shontelligence Propel Shontelle to Superstadom?

The Reviewer
New artist Shontelle is one of the fresh new faces in the reggae and R&B world. She has collaborated with established stars like Rihanna and written hit singles for other artists. Now it is time for Shontelle to step out from the shadows on her debut album Shontelligence. Will Shontelle receive the same success as fellow Barbados artist Rihanna?

The first single off of Shontelligence is T-Shirt. The single was a good first choice to introduce Shontelle to the mainstream audience. The song is a solid acoustic guitar driven R&B track. Women around the world will be able to relate to the subject matter featured on the track.

The second single off the album is Battle Cry. The track is very different than T-Shirt. The song is much more upbeat and up-tempo. The track is fairly solid however nothing all that too memorable.

Roll It was originally performed by Allison Hinds, however Shontelle originally wrote the track for herself. The song is a solid reggae driven track that will do well with many different audiences.

Focus Pon Me might be the best track on the album. The song is a very solid reggae song that will do very well in the clubs. The listener cannot help but move when listening to the track.

Superwoman is another acoustic guitar driven song of female empowerment. The track will probably have women reacting the same way as they did to Beyonce' Irreplaceable.

Plastic People is another track fairly similar to T-Shirt. The song features a very interesting and different subject matter than you would expect from a new artist.

Ghetto Lullaby is another solid track. The writing and production on the track are not expected as well and work well together. The song features a vocal interpolation of the nursery rhyme Hush Little Baby.

I Crave You takes a unique take on Sting's hit Shape Of My Heart which is featured prominently on numerous songs including Craig David and Sting's remarkable duet Rise & Fall. This is one of the first times the track has been used with a reggae beat behind it.

Life Is Not An Easy Road is a fairly solid reggae track that features a catchy melody. The track is not overtly memorable but it is not filler.

The album closes with Flesh And Bone. The song is the typical reggae track. The song could have been featured on any album by any reggae artist and leaves the listener flat on an otherwise successful album.

Overall Shontelligence showcases the fact that Shontelle can do well in various musical genres. There are solid reggae and R&B tracks. Overall Shontelligence gets 7.5 out of 10. If you are a fan of R&B singer Shontelle make sure you pick up Shontelligence when it is available in stores on November 18th.
