Shoot 'Em Up

For fans of the senseless mayhem variety of movies, Shoot 'Em Up is a must see spoof of a spoof of an action movie aka Spaceballs times 2. This movie makes fun of the action genre that has been made famous by Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and many others by the three basic principles of an action film: the hero never gets shot no matter how many bad guys are shooting at him, the hero always gets the girl, and the hero always defeats the villain. In this case, Clive Owen plays the hero, Smith; Monica Bellucci plays the girl, DQ; and Paul Giamatti plays the villain. Owen plays the angriest, most hard-edged man on earth who finds himself assigned to protect a newborn child ala Children of Men. With the help of a prostitute (Bellucci), Smith must save this baby and must determine why Hertz (Giamatti) wants this baby dead.

At one point during the movie, Mr. Smith takes out 50 of Hertz's goons with what seems to be one clip. But Mr. Smith's main weapon of choice: a carrot. What's up, Doc? I have never seen so many carrots in one movie since the Bugs Bunny movies, but I doubt Bugs Bunny ever attempted to stab Yosemite Sam or Elmer Fudd in the eye or mouth with a carrot. If kids were not eating their vegetables before, they will now. With an hour and 20 minutes of non-stop bombardment among a barrage of bullets and with the charismatic and dreamy Clive Owen facing every gunfight imaginable even while falling from a plane through the air, Shoot 'Em Up is a movie the die-hard action fans will not want to miss.
