A suspect has been arrested in the shootings that took place yesterday near California State University near Fresno. One man was killed and two others were wounded when Jamal Brooks opened fire in a nearby apartment complex. The shootings were the result of a confrontation over a Sony PlayStation late Monday night. Brooks opened fire from the University Village Apartments. Brant Daniels, 19, was killed by Brooks, while Roderick Buycks, 19, and Drew Pfeiff, 22, were wounded. Pfeiff was not enrolled at the university.
"The guy who shot us- he had stolen from our apartment," Pfeiff said. "We went to confront him with the evidence and it just turned ugly from there. He pulled a gun out on us."
Pfeiff, from Raleigh, North Carolina, added that people "don't deserve to die from stupid stuff like this."
Police say that Brooks fled the scene after the shootings but were in contact with him later on to determine that he did not enter the Fresno State University campus. Despite the determination, campus authorities put out an alert on the school's Web site and offered help to those who needed counseling. After learning Brooks had left the scene, police began to search other areas of the University Village Apartment Complex as well as other parts of Fresno. A weapon had not been recovered so Brooks was deemed armed and dangerous by local and federal authorities.
The arrest came when police were able to talk to the suspect by phone as U.S. Marshals and local authorities searched for him. After intense negotiations with the police, an attorney and Brooks' family, the suspect was finally arrested by police. They discovered that he had attempted to change his appearance by shaving his head and changing his clothes.
The shooting brings to mind the Virginia Tech shootings that happened less than a month ago; however, a spokesperson for the Fresno Police Department said this incident was different. "This is not another Virginia Tech," Cardinale said. "This is simply a dispute between one person and a group of individuals."
Brooks, of Hayward, California, was majoring in Criminology, ironically. Friends and family members described him as a normal student but hadn't been in contact with him in recent weeks prior to the incident.
