Shop for a Multipurpose Desk

How We Helped My Senior Citizen Father Find A Desk My Sister Who Uses a Wheelchair

My father, a senior citizen, told us he wanted to buy a multipurpose desk for my sister who uses a wheelchair. We offered to help him find a desk that would be accessible for my sister.

This article will discuss how we helped my senior citizen dad shop for a desk for my sister who uses a wheelchair.

Preliminary Discussion: My senior citizen dad told us that he wanted my sister who uses a wheelchair to easily access the desktop to write letters, greeting cards, etc. and that the desk should also have enough space for her to place her deskpad calendar on the desktop surface. My dad wanted the desk to have easily accessible storage space for my sister. In addition my dad wanted a place to store his desk supplies such as cellophane tape and paper clips. He also mentioned that he would like to have a place to put his mail. All of this information would be extremely important as we shopped for the desk.

Cost of the Desk: We asked my senior citizen father how much money he wanted to spend for the desk. With this information we decided that office supply stores would most likely sell a desk in his price range.

Measuring the Available Space and My Sister's Wheelchair: My husband measured the space where my senior citizen father wanted to place the desk. He also measured my sister's wheelchair so that we would know if she could access the desk using her wheelchair. He wrote down all of the measurements in a mini notepad, which he brought with us when we went shopping for the desk.

Looking at Store Websites and Store Sale Circulars: My senior citizen father looked at several office supply store sale circulars with me, while my husband looked at the websites for these office supply stores. After a bit of searching, we were fortunate to see a nice desk in one of the office supply store sale circulars. The desk had lots of easily accessible storage space for my sister including a lower shelf, a lower desk drawer, and a lower storage space for her computer tower. The desk also had lots of upper storage slots that my dad could use to store his mail along with a few upper storage shelves for his use too.

Visiting the Store: My senior citizen dad drove us to the office supply store so that we could see the desk and measure it. Hopefully the dimensions of the desk would allow my sister to access the desk and use it comfortably. We went to the section where the furniture is displayed and saw the desk. My husband and my dad measured the desk and discovered that the desk would be accessible for my sister who uses a wheelchair. The desk would also fit in the space where my dad wanted to place it. While we were in the store, we also looked at the other desks that the store had on display. However, we decided that the desk that was on sale was the best desk for my sister and my dad, so my dad purchased it.

Assembling the Desk: After we brought the desk home, my husband opened the box and we found the instruction book to help us assembly the desk. The instruction book had a list of all the pieces and various screws, etc. that would be required to assembly the desk. After we made certain that we had everything we needed, we easily assembled the desk following the directions given in the instruction book. After a few hours the desk was assembled and set in place against the living room wall.

My Sister's Reaction to the Desk: When my sister visited my senior citizen dad the next morning, she was happy to see the desk. She told us that she eagerly awaited the delivery of her computer. We went back to visit my dad when the computer arrived so that we could set-up the computer for my sister and place it on the desk. My sister was very happy that she could easily access her new computer and her desk.

We were happy that we helped my senior citizen dad shop for the desk. He and my sister really like the desk and they use it often.
