Cameron Village celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2009, and hails as the first shopping center in the Carolina area, as well as one of the oldest shopping sites in the country. The shopping area is part of one of the oldest planned communities in the United States, dating back to 1947.
It has grown and evolved many times over during the 60-year period, but despite the innovations, it's always kept its southern charm. Don't equate this to mean boring, mind you. The look and feel of this shopping area may be that of the comfortable shopping areas of days of old, but with over 100 upscale, chic stores that's where the similarity ends.
In between your shop visits, you'll find lots to see and do. The North Carolina Museum of Art has paired up with Cameron Village to make a shopping spree much more visual. At the Cameron Canvas as they refer to it, you will find works of noted, local artists, courtesy of The North Carolina Museum of Art. New and old beauty meld together to make this area more than just a recreated shopping site. And since it changes on a regular basis, you don't run the risk of becoming bored.
But you want to know about the shopping, right? Otherwise, why would you be looking at a shopping village? Well, you won't be disappointed. Locals of The Triangle region regard Cameron Village as one of the best shopping opportunities around.
Just as developers have taken great pains to mix eclectic old and new beauty together, they've done the same from the shopping point of view. Fancy boutiques run by local shop owners display designer, upscale women's clothing, home accessories, classic men's attire, pet accessories, along with the one-of-a-kind offbeat item. You'll find something that suits your needs as you stroll down the streets at a leisurely pace.
For home furnishings, Carlton and Company Home Furnishings (located at 2010 Clark Ave., 919-836-1240), Pier One Imports (located at 436 Daniels St., 919-828-1799), and Pirates Chest Antiques & Interiors (located at 2050 Clark Ave., 919-833-1230) are good jumping off points.
If you want to dress up you, as opposed to your home, Cameron Village brings fashion in every shape, size, style and age. Talbots Womens, (located at 2028 Cameron St., 919-821-5574), Uniquities (located at 450 Daniels St., 919-832-1234), and Victoria's Secret (located at 2015 Cameron St., 919-821-3784) give you an idea as to the range in style for women's attire.
Men aren't ignored. The classic Jos. A. Banks Clothiers (located at 505 Daniels St., 919-828-8700) and Wardrobe (located at 430 Daniels St., 919-828-8700) provide great choices for men's fashion.
And then there are the specialty shops. Tookies Toys (located at 2028 Cameron St., 919-828-5574) and Ten Thousand Villages Raleigh (located at 435 Woodburn Rd., 919-821-1100) are just two of the many unique offerings. Beyond the shopping buffet Cameron Village touts, you'll find many more ways to pamper yourself. Hair salons, coloring salons even a day spa will spoil you.
Take a leisurely lunch or dinner break along the way. Again, this is all meant to be an excursion as opposed to an adventure or trek. You'll find familiar names: Noodles & Company, Starbucks, even a McDonald's, but there are also eateries to keep that charming southern mood stoked. The Cameron Bar & Grill (located at 2018 Clark Ave., 919-755-2231) or Moe's Southwest Grill (located at 506 Daniels St., 919-664-6637) may be in order for a leisurely day. End it all with some sweet treats from the Cafe Carolina and Bakery or Baskin Robbins.
Nestled in all of these options are standard services. There is no need to leave here to drop off your dry cleaning, rent a video or even return a library book. All options are represented in Cameron Village.
