Those holes in the shopping cart - they really don't make things easy sometimes, do they? Of course, you can put down that child seat and that at least allows you a place to put your purse. But if there's a child in that seat, then what? It can be tricky to go shopping for a lot of food, carting at least one child around with you, carry your purse, and even sort through coupons. What you need is a handy helper and you can have one. Quickly make a shopping cart caddy and you can use it to sort and hold coupons, to hold your cell phone, and to otherwise make things easier on yourself.
You can take the time to cut and sew the caddy, and to do that, cut 2 pieces of fabric to be 15" wide and 16" long. The fabric can be light to heavy weight. Stack them so that their right sides are facing each other. Sew almost all the way around the rectangle but leave a small area for turning. Turn the arrangement right side-out and sew the opening shut.
Lay the square in front of you so that one of the 15" sides is facing you. Take the edge facing you and bring it up to the opposite side to fold the fabric almost all the way in half. Sew down each of the sides to seam them. Turn the caddy right side-out.
You can save yourself a lot of time and effort by making the shopping cart caddy from a cloth placemat. Just lay the mat in front of you, fold it nearly in half, pin, then sew the side seams. If you want, sew a vertical line or two to create sections within the pocket.
Whether you sew the pocket arrangement yourself, or you make it from a placemat, you'll need tabs that will help you hang the organizer on the handle of the cart. These, too, can be cut and sewn by you, or you can just cut pieces of wide ribbon to make them.
Sew one end of a strap to the longest side of the pocket, on the backside, and near the top. This should be placed a couple of inches from the side edge. Do the same to the opposite side. Then, sew a piece of Velcro to the other end of each ribbon, and their opposing pieces to the first end of the ribbon.
To use the shopping cart caddy just feed the two straps through the handle and Velcro them in place. Put coupons in it as you shop, keep your cell phone really close, and even put a pack of tissues in the caddy. Shopping will be much easier now.
