Shopping for Colonial New England Themed Holiday Gifts

Katherine Huether
There are two sides to New England. There's modern New England, filled with malls and all of the latest stores. Then, there's the historical side. Small country inns, gift shops selling traditional crafts and goods reminiscent of the Colonial Era, and artisans who are keeping old traditions alive. It is here that you will find unique opportunities for gift giving during the holiday season.

Country Inns and Restaurants

There are three ways you can explore this option for gift giving. The Wayside Inn in Sudbury, Massachusetts has a gift shop, restaurant, and rooms to stay in. So, you can visit the gift shop for gift ideas or get a loved one a gift certificate to stay in one of the rooms or go out to dinner.

Other inns to look into are the York Harbor Inn in York, ME who boasts upscale rooms and dining and one of the tastiest seafood chowders on the coast. The Colonial Inn in Concord, MA is also a good one to explore. Search online for more options - there are inns, restaurants, and bed and breakfasts scattered throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

Explore the Colonial Towns

These are towns and cities such as Concord, MA, Lexington, MA and Boston that have a rich history. There are several things you can do for holiday gifts concerning these cities. You could pitch in for a trip to any of these places if you live somewhere else and are fascinated by the history. If you live nearby, you could get someone a gift certificate to one of the historical sites if they are a history buff. Or, you could visit the towns yourself if you live nearby and visit some of the gift shops and craft shops. These are always great places to find traditional crafts and other Colonial-inspired gifts.

Shop for Traditional Gifts Online

You don't need to visit a gift shop in a historic New England town in order to find great colonial-inspired gifts. There are plenty of options. For example, you can shop online at Amazon.com for a book about the history of the area. Or, you could search online for popular specialty companies such as Stonewall Kitchen which is based out of Maine. They offer gourmet food and other kitchen specialty items. You could also look for artists and artisans that offer their sculptures, paintings, and crafts online. The possibilities are endless. With the internet you can shop with a New England theme from afar.

No matter which option you choose, the important thing to remember is to keep the personality of the recipient in mind when choosing your gifts.
