Shopping for Moldings in NYC

Shopping in America's largest city provides the consumer with an overwhelming amount of choices. When shopping for your home's decor, whether it is new construction or a remodeling job, New York City's offerings will not disappoint! Moldings are a necessary detail to any home, serving a specific function. Yet, functionality does not mean that style has to be sacrificed. If you're in the Big Apple, and you're in the market for moldings, you'll have no trouble finding people to help.

Although every home needs moldings to do the simple job of covering the spaces where the walls meet the floors or ceilings, simplicity need not be the main characterization of your molding choices. Character and warmth can be created within any home with the proper moldings. The amount of detail provided by custom moldings are limited only by your imagination.

As disappointing as it may sound, price is the first factor to consider before beginning your search. Set a budget for the moldings, and go from there. If you know you're going to have to go with the lowest possible prices, a local home-improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot may be your best choice. They offer a fairly wide variety, and both are customer-friendly in their efforts to help you decide. One of the benefits of visiting a local store is your ability to pair moldings together and decide how much "build-up" you want in your home.

Do-it-yourself people will enjoy creating a custom look and feel, even if the job is as simple as adding crown molding in the guest bathroom. Home-improvement stores usually have clinics that will teach you how to plan, purchase, and effect your project. If you make a mistake here and there, you will not have broken the bank in the process. Expo is Home Depot's upscale design center. Here, you'll have an even wider selection of styles, and you'll have an expert who will work with you to create a plan for your home. Some of the home-improvement stores even have tool rental available. All you'll need to purchase is the moldings.

If you have a larger budget, New York City is waiting with many interior designers, custom home-builders, and master carpenters to help you. Places such as Architectural Woodworking, New York City Remodeling, and NY Masterpiece are good choices when starting your project, and they'll come to you. They listen to your ideas and preferences, take a look around at the areas you're considering, measure, and get back to you with a quote. These companies have many years of experience and have built a wealth of knowledge about the different styles of molding available.

Of course, with expertise and customization, you'll definitely spend more. If your home is new construction, your builder will more than likely be happy to listen to any suggestions you have. Often, interior designers can serve as a go-between for a client who is building a home. Designers are in touch with experts in all areas related to home construction. Having a middleman, however, will also add on the dollars. Bringing in a designer means paying him as well as the company who installs your moldings.

Companies such as Knockout Renovation, My Home, and Fit Design Studio are excellent choices to start your design process. Before you sign a contract or any money exchanges hands, ask to see a portfolio of previous work. Any professional designer or builder should have examples of their work so customers can know the level of quality they're buying.

Two internet directories are dexigner.com and cityhammer.com. They have listings of a huge number of designers and builders in New York. Look around at friends' houses or in design magazines. You're sure to find out more about what your personal likes and dislikes are, and perhaps you'll even come up with a new style all your own.
