Shopping Online: A Trend That's Here to Stay

Vicki Arnold
Once a risky venture, shopping online has become a staple for many consumers. This trend is only going to grow larger. With more consumers becoming conscientious about the environment, the economy and time management in general, online shopping poses to become the primary shopping experience in the years ahead.

Shopping online benefits the environment. It requires no gas or diesel. Online shopping emits no greenhouse gases. It means no thin, plastic shopping bags that will end up in already crowding landfills. Online is a great place to find gently used or vintage items, also saving landfill space.

Shopping online also has side-effect benefits for the environment. Businesses advertising online are not using paper and ink, saving trees. Choosing to shop online removes another car from over-crowded roadways. Less traffic leads to less stopping-and-going on highways, so the cars on the road run more efficiently.

With an unstable economy, more consumers are looking to save money where they can. Gas bills undeniably receive the most scrutiny. Shopping online saves consumers gas. With the cost of fuel rising so quickly, the draw-back of paying shipping for online purchases is quickly being outweighed by the money saved by not driving.

With the rise in recalls, more consumers are becoming aware of their product's origination, as well as who their hard-earned dollars are supporting. More American consumers are choosing to spend their money on products from American businesses. This bodes well for the "Mom and Pop" small businesses. Shopping online allows consumers to support small businesses, even if they are not in their own town.

Shopping online saves consumers cash. Aside from saving on fuel costs, shopping online is a great way to comparison shop, ensuring the best price possible. There are many websites that offer rebates for shopping online. Websites run special web-only deals. By shopping online auction sites or classifieds, money can be saved by purchasing leftover, new products or even previously owned.

Finally, shopping online saves time. There is no trekking from store to store looking for that specific item only to come up empty-handed, wasting time, money and gas. A simple online search for the product will reveal online stores, reviews and price comparisons.

Shopping online has gained momentum since the turn of the century. With increases in security software, easier to navigate websites and a more competitive market, there is no reason for the trend to end. Online shopping is here to stay.
