The northern panhandle of West Virginia is a fascinating place to visit, as it is steeped in history and possesses its own unique culture. In addition to the numerous historical and cultural places to visit, this part of the state is also home to a number of unique shopping opportunities. This article, the first in a series, will detail a few of those shopping opportunities that are definitely worth a visit during your next trip to West Virginia.

Homer Laughlin China Company

Located in the small town of Newell, the Homer Laughlin China Company is perhaps most famous for producing the beautiful dinnerware known as Fiestaware, which has proven to be enduringly popular throughout its several years of existence. While you're in the area, be sure to visit the factory, where you can buy some examples of this beautiful dinnerware to add to your own collection. Although the showroom pieces can often be quite pricey, you can also visit the Seconds Room, where you can find some of the same dishes for a fraction of the price (although it might take a little bit of searching to find the exact pieces that you want).

The Highlands Near Wheeling

This outdoor shopping mall, which is a fairly new addition to the area, is positively full of restaurants and shops where you can spend an entire day. Of particular note are Books-A-Million, the area's premier bookstore, Old Navy, Bath and Body Works, Best Buy, and Cabela's, which is a perfect spot for the outdoorsman or hunter in your party. You can also grab a bite to eat at once of the numerous restaurants at the Highlands, including Olive Garden, Panera Bread, and several others. If you are looking for a great shopping experience, look no further than the Highlands near Wheeling.

Wheeling Centre Market

This quaint shopping district is housed in an old market that once called Wheeling home. While you're here you'll find a number of unique shopping opportunities, including a used bookstore, artwork crafted by local artists, and several antique shops. You can also partake of some of the best food in the area, including the very famous Coleman's Fish. Once you've had one of their delicious fish sandwiches, you'll come back again and again for another.

Whether you're looking for something along the lines of the everyday or for something a little more unique, you're sure to find it in the northern panhandle of West Virginia. After a shopping outing here, you'll come home with some of the finest-made items in West Virginia. This is one shopping trip that you're sure to remember for a long time to come.
