Shopping for a Prom Dress in Atlanta

Where Atlanta's Young Starlets Shop for the Ball

Ahhh, it's that time once again. Spring is in the air, and your guy has his eye on that baby blue ruffled tuxedo and matching cummerbund, which in turn has given you a case of the jitters. No, not the pre-wedding jitters. That's right, it's prom time. And as the years progress, so do the choices of gowns for Atlanta's southern belles (Is that term even used anymore?).

During a quick jaunt to the nearest shopping mall, you'll find yourself lured to any number of stores offering up gorgeous formal apparel. But the prices may be anything but alluring. So what other options are out there for the style-savvy prom-goer, who wants to keep costs to a minimum? Here are a few for starters:

  1. One of the easiest ways to purchase a prom dress is to shop online. There are literally hundreds of sites available which cater to formal occasions such as weddings and proms. David's Bridal (www.davidsbridal.com) has a section designated specifically for prom shopping. This website is very user friendly. You may browse dresses by style, size, or even color. The site also has a local store locator, if you prefer to examine the selections in person.

  2. No teen wants to be one of five young ladies wearing the same style prom gown. Thus, teens are now making fashion statements by opting for more distinctive styles. Instead of shopping online, or in the malls where droves of their classmates may be, they are hitting up local vintage and thrift stores. A popular consignment boutique in Atlanta, called Psycho Sisters, is actually a chain boasting five different metro Atlanta locations. Here, prom shoppers will find an assortment of vintage clothing (including gowns!), accessories, costumes, and on occasion, rare designer labels. The prices are considerably less expensive than stores which feature formal gowns exclusively. Psycho Sisters is definitely a store where hip teens can find one-of-a-kind styles.

  3. Anyone who remembers the 1980's film "Pretty in Pink", will recall the main character's penchant for creating avante garde outfits out of thrift store finds. Shopping in thrift stores can prove frustrating for some. But for the adventuresome teenager with a little creativity, thrift stores are a goldmine. For just a fraction of retail prices, one can find vintage, modern, or semi-formal attire that is ready-to-wear. For those with sewing ability (or those that know someone with this skill), thrift store discoveries can become jaw-dropping masterpieces with a little altering and some tender loving care.

Whether you shop online or in person, remember that prom night doesn't usually begin and end with dancing and photos. Therefore, it's important to find a dress that is comfortable enough for general movement, and of course, eating and drinking. Top off your special find with some unique accessories, and you're sure to be the belle Starlet of the Ball!

  • Exclusive designer labels can sometimes be found for a fraction of the cost.
  • Teenagers are now more creative than ever in their personal style.
  • The desire for originality in formalwear has boosted prom shopping options.

Shopping for Prom Dress in Atlanta, GA. Found a couple of unusual stores after driving with my Mom and 2 friends for a couple of days around Marietta, Roswell, Liliburn, Kennesaw and Atlanta. Both stores are in Kennesaw. A Formal Occasion 0n Bells Ferry Road is a smallish but quaint store with a very nice selection of Prom dresses (but not a lot of Ballgowns). Friendly people with good service.
The store with the largest stock of Prom dresses was CC's of Rome by Town center.
Their dresses are displayed in a cool mix of colors and special styles that made it easier to shop and find my special dress. CC's staff were friendly and very helpful. I used a coupon that they had on line- ccsprom.com
They registered my dress so they wouldn't sell an other one like it to another girl at my school- I liked that a lot..
