Shopping for Teen Clothing in Jersey City, New Jersey

Kelsey O'Callahan
When looking for teen clothing stores in Jersey City, NJ, there is one main destinations that comes immediately to mind. Newport Centre Mall, easily accessible off of the light rail and PATH trains, offers many teen clothing stores, and is a good place to visit to hit the most stores in one place. Two of your first stops should be teen favorites American Eagle and Aeropostale. These two stores offer the always-trendy California-preppy look right here in Jersey City.

American Eagle is a good place to pick up some of the staples of a teen wardrobe, not to find unique fashion choices. Jeans and cute t-shirts are some of their best items. Aeropostale is cheaper than American Eagle, though they have less variety; however, the store is very small and there is usually not enough staff to keep up during sales and busy times, meaning it can be difficult to navigate. American Eagle's sizes can run both large and small, depending on the item of clothing, so be sure to try it on. Aeropostale's clothing usually runs small. American Eagle and Aeropostale also both offer clothing for teen guys.

For runway inspired looks, head to le chateau; their clothing is sophisticated, yet trendy, though they can be quite expensive. Their salespeople are usually very helpful, though the sizing runs small. Clubbing and going-out outfits in teen clothing stores can also be found at Charlotte Russe, Forever 21, and Wet Seal. Charlotte Russe's clothing runs really small, but Forever 21 is generally true to size. If you don't mind looking for a bargain, head to the Pay/Half department store; though you may need to spend a bit of time looking, you can find designer clothes for low prices, and more unique items that you won't see every third girl wearing. The lines can get a bit long, though. Newport Mall stores usually close around 8-9 pm on weekdays.

Another great place to shop for teen clothes in that area is the Target in Jersey City; it's located right across from the Newport Mall. The clothes there are low priced, but very fashionable, and they carry a great variety of looks and styles, including plus size, workwear, sportswear, and teen guy's clothing. Plus, top designers often premiere their collections for a limited time at Target, meaning you can get designer looks for a fraction of the price. Visit often, because their merchandise updates all the time. Target's salespeople are very helpful, too, and Target is open until 11 pm.

If you're looking for a more urban look, as is popular in Jersey City, the teen clothing store chain Rainbow will become one of your frequent stops. Rainbow offers urban and trendy fashions at very low prices in locations all over Hudson County, including locations at Hudson Mall on Route 440, off of Central, Bergenline, and West Side Avenues, as well as Journal Square.

Rainbow also offers shoes and plus sized clothing. Rainbow's sizing tends to run small, and their clothes are somewhat cheaply made, but for the price it can't be beat. If you like something, don't wait until it goes on sale, because there is always new merchandise coming in. If you head to Hudson Mall, be sure to stop in Old Navy as well; they are well known for teen wardrobe staples like jeans and t-shirts, and have recently been adding more trendy items to their repertoire. Old Navy offers from size 00-20 in stores. Their clothing runs very true to size, and is generally of good quality. During sales, you can find great deals. Their salespeople are helpful, and there are usually no long lines. Old Navy is not strictly a teen clothing store, but they have plenty to offer for teens and their families. They also sell clothing for teen boys.
