Shopping Tips for the Beauty Counter

Laura Leiva
When it comes to beauty products, there is not a 'one size fits all' approach to finding something that works for your skin tone or features. This is where sampling at the beauty counter comes in handy. While you can go up to the counter and have a professional show you exactly what works best for your needs, the awkward feeling of needing to buy everything that was used can often exceed your budget. Here are a few tips on how you can get the most benefit out of your visit to the beauty counter:

Leave the embarrassment at the door!

Professionals are there for a reason, to help you break free of your makeup rut or help you try something new. Try not to feel embarrassed about not knowing how to do something or that you have less-than-perfect skin. She will give you invaluable tips on how to work with your skin and makeup to create a flawless look.

Visit during off-hours

If you don't want to deal with the rush of customers, avoid going to the counter on the weekends or during the lunch hour, which is when many have time off and go. In order to get the time for yourself and have the attention of a professional, be sure to visit in the mornings before lunch or during a lull in the afternoon, between lunch and dinner.

Tell them exactly what you want/need

If you want to know how to make your eyebrows look exceptionally shaped, it won't help if they try to sell you the hottest lip gloss. Take inventory of what you already have at home-- that way you know what you need to buy when you visit the counter to keep your look going even when you get home.

Speak up

Wearing makeup should enhance your self-confidence, not make you feel awkward or self-conscience. If you hate green eyeshadow, tell her upfront to save her time and yours. When she knows your likes and dislikes, she can be sure to offer you suggestions and products that you will like and wear.

Check out counter policy

Some beauty counters don't mind if you come in for a makeover, as long as you buy products they use. Other stores allow you to sample products without a minimum purchase requirement. While chances are if you go to the beauty counter you are looking for something to buy, check ahead to avoid the awkward exit at the store.
