However, before you actually shell out your money to buy the lights, you need to ponder on a few things. For example, do you know where exactly will you be using the lights? How many strands will you be using? And what type of lights do you want to actually have on the tree? These are all important questions that need answering before anything else, because what you buy will strongly depend on these answers.
First of all, you need to know where will the Christmas lights be used in the room. Basically the first thing you need to do is measure the area length plus a few inches gong to the power outlet. Most people will place the lights actually on the tree (unless they are using low voltage outdoor lights) and this means extra precautions are needed, such as using a tape measure that will measure the real length needed.
Also you need to know in advance the number of strands that you need your Christmas lights to be. Let's say if you have measures 60 feet for the area that you will be covering with the lights, and you have a strand 10 feet, you will need 6 of these strands. When you buy your strands make sure that they are shorter as they can be much easier replaced in case any of the actual strands have damages to it.
Finally, you need to be clear on the type of the lights you will be buying. This again depends on knowing how you will be using the lights. If you use them on the tree, you will need different lights compared to using them outdoor, where you will need outdoor lights.
Regardless of the type, however, you will need to know the features of your lights including the light bulbs, the type of strands and the style of the plug. First of all, you can find many different types of light bulbs in various colors, sizes and shapes. You could go with one color that matches the Christmas tree decor, or go crazy in all colors, to have a real funky set of lights. Of course you will also need to know how many light bulbs you will need, however you can easily find that out once you know the number of strands to buy. This is because the number of bulbs that are on each strand is actually printed on the package.
When it comes to the actual strand, you have two options. Either you go with serial wiring, or with parallel wiring. I personally prefer the parallel one, because if you buy strands with the serial wiring, if one light bulb gives up its ghost, all the bulbs in the strand will stop working as well. With the parallel one, everything else works if one or two bulbs have died, so you don't have to worry about needing to replace your entire strand.
Lastly, when it comes to the plug type, most probably you will be using several strands for your lights, so you should buy an end to end plug which allows you to connect the strands all nicely together in one go. For one strand only, you can go with any type of plug as long as it works.
Hope these tips have helped in knowing which type of Christmas lights to buy for your upcoming holidays. Happy Christmas!
