Shopping with Young Kids? Read On!

Shopping with kids is difficult; there is no doubt about it. You can, however, increase your success rate with a few timely tips and decisions. I have two toddlers and have found there is a way to shop with them and still have fun. They have grown to love shopping and we consider it a joy to go to the store. If you have little ones, read on for some excellent advice on how to make the shopping trip enjoyable for everyone! With these tips, you may even find that it is fun to take your kids out to the store, and soon you will hear comments on how well behaved your kids are in the store!

First thing is to consider all the needs the kids will have while you are out and about. Kids need to eat, and they need to eat often. Shopping burns lots of calories, so be sure to pack a hefty snack for them and for yourself! Some simple snacks include trail mix, crackers, granola bars and dried fruit. These snacks are simple to pack, don't make a big mess and will fill little tummies while giving them essential nutrients and healthy calories. Try to not fill your kids with excessive sugar treats as that may only make matters worse!

You will also want to be sure that your kids are rested and have plenty of energy left for the shopping trip. Never try to shop with a tired toddler. Tired toddlers throw fits, and lots of them! You can't expect a sleepy child to cooperate with you when you are shopping, so if the kids are tired, stay home! There is no winning with this specific battle! Plan to shop shortly after your kids wake up in the morning, or just after nap time is finished. These times are usually fairly slow at the stores anyway, so they work out well for everyone involved!

Another simple tip that adds lots of fun is to go with a friend. Whether the friend has kids or not isn't important, but what is important is that you have someone to tag team with. If you need to run into the bathroom, or try on some clothes, one can stay with the kids while the other does what they need to do. This has proven to be one of my most successful tips for shopping with my little ones. I especially love to take my mom since the kids love and know her and she loves to help me!

While shopping with the kids it is very important to take breaks. Between stores you can sit on a bench or stop for a food break. This will replenish the kids and may allow them some down time to release some energy.

It is also important that you have proper expectations of what your kids will want to buy. They are watching you buy fun stuff and naturally will want something as well. If there is a toy department, expect to either buy your child a toy, or try to give them something special before you leave home. Kids love to play with mommy's purchases too. Shoes, bags, and hangers can entertain my kids for many circles around the store. It is only fair to allow the kids to pick out something for themselves if you are asking they shop with you. Plan this into your budget so that you are not stressed by the additional cost of your shopping trip.

One last tip of shopping with your kids is to avoid the busiest times at the stores. Weekends are generally a no-no if you are with your kids. If you can only go on the weekend try to get to the store just as they open. The early birds usually get the best items anyway! Holiday shopping is always busy, so if you know you have gifts you need to buy, try to shop ahead so that you can avoid the crazy crowds as the holiday approaches.

Kids love excitement and shopping is very exciting. As long as you remain patient with your children and communicate well with them, you can be successful. Follow the above rules for your toddlers and you'll see how much fun shopping can be!
