Short Story Review: "Colder Than You Think" by Stefan Bourque

Stefan Bourque's short story, "Colder Than You Think," is available on his website, www.darkwriter.com as a free download. You can download it here.

"Colder Than You Think" is Stefan Bourque's latest short story and it is one tasty little treat. Those who love drama, romance, horror and suspense will fall in love with this story. Set in current times and told from the viewpoint of the protagonist, C.S. Monroe, readers will get shivers from this chilling tale.

C.S. Monroe, is of all things, a famous mystery writer, who finds himself retuning to his roots in Massachusetts when he falls in love with Rebecca, a woman he met while vacationing in Virginia Beach.

The story starts out normal enough, with C.S. Monroe stopping in at a friend's bookstore to do a book signing before journeying on to Rebecca's house. However, a raging blizzard threatens his chances of ever making it to her house, and what ensues next is the equivalent of a dramatic, unforgettable film noir.

Stefan Bourque eloquently displays his command over atmosphere by creating an ambience so haunting, so gritty, so cold that you will want to finish this story wrapped in a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate. Just don't spill your hot chocolate when an unexpected noise jolts you from this tension-gripping story. Right when you think you have figured out the ending, when you have unraveled the mystery that lies deep within C.S. Monroe himself, you discover that Bourque has masterfully seduced you and you are merely along for the ride.

Never before has Stefan Bourque's writing seemed so real, so powerful, so resplendent. "Colder Than You Think" marks a distinct change in his writing style and it romances the reader, leaving you feeling wholly fulfilled, yet begging for more. I have nothing but praise for this harrowing tale that will leave you feeling haunted and chilled.
