Short Summary of the Book of 1 Kings

Randy Jones
1 Kings: This book is a sequel the the books of 1 and 2 Samuel and begins by following Solomon's rise to a king after the death of His father King David. The book begins with a united kingdom and ends with two individual kingdoms in the nation which are Judah and Israel. 1 Kings recorded the strengths of Solomon as a ruler and his prayers for wisdom and his building of The Lord's Temple. In the Hebrew Bible 1 and 2 Kings are combined into one book.

If you follow the book of 1 Kings, you can see how the book starts with Solomon and how he was born out of a palace scandle between his father David and Bathsheba and like his father, Solomon also had a weakness for woman, which would eventually lead to his downfall. If you follow the entire book you see how it started out with Solomon and ends with Elijah.

The book ends with a spiritual rush for the reader when we read how later after the death of Solomon, Israel was again ruled by evil and idolatrous kings who led the people away from God. Among the worst would have been King Ahab and his queen, Jezebel who brought the worship of baal back to Israel.

Elijah had had enough and challenged the preists of Baal to a showdown with God at Mt. Carmel, where we can easily read God most certainly won this battle.

The book documents well the life of Solomon as well his weaknesses, such as woman, building his own palace for himself, and his many wives which led to idolatry worship. The historical narratives in this book still ring true today about the company we keep and being mixed with non-believers.
