The book of Second Kings gives a historical step by step account of the downfall of the divided kingdoms. Prophets continuously warn the nation that God's wrath and judgment would soon be coming for their sins, but they would not turn to God and repent. Israel is continually ruled by evil kings, each brought more sin than the last, even though some of the kings in Judah did follow the will of God many of the evil kings lead the people away from the worship of God. Here we can see that that even with the good kings and Elisha as well as other prophets they could not stop the decline of the nation.
The Northern Kingdom is eventually destroyed by the Assyrians, and later the Southern Kingdom is destroyed by the Babylonians.
The themes found within 2 Kings are evident to the reader. The first would be, God will judge those who have turned from Him. The second is, words spoken by the prophets will always come to pass because God is a keeper of His word. Third would be, God keeps His promises.
