Short Summary of the Book of 2 Samuel

Randy Jones
2 Samuel: At one point in time the books of 1 and 2 Samuel were composed of one book. The translators for the Septuagint deemed it necessary for them to be separated early on and they have remained this way as 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel since. The coverage of 1 Samuel span about 100 years, from c. 1100 B.C. to c. 1000 B.C. The events of 2 Samuel cover another 40 years. This would place the date of writing sometime after 960 B.C. The Book of 2 Samuel is more of a record of King David's reign and as well it records the Davidic Covenant in it's historical content. This book is primarily broken up in three sections as recorded.
  • The first being the triumphs of David.
  • The second would be the troubles David had.
  • The third would be more of a non-chronological record detailing further the reign of King David.

The genres of 2 Samuel deal with David's loss, lust and success from Judah to Israel from fleeing from Saul to the loss of His good friend Jonathan to lust and murder over adultery.
