2 Samuel: At one point in time the books of 1 and 2 Samuel were composed of one book. The translators for the Septuagint deemed it necessary for them to be separated early on and they have remained this way as 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel since. The coverage of 1 Samuel span about 100 years, from c. 1100 B.C. to c. 1000 B.C. The events of 2 Samuel cover another 40 years. This would place the date of writing sometime after 960 B.C. The Book of 2 Samuel is more of a record of King David's reign and as well it records the Davidic Covenant in it's historical content. This book is primarily broken up in three sections as recorded.
The genres of 2 Samuel deal with David's loss, lust and success from Judah to Israel from fleeing from Saul to the loss of His good friend Jonathan to lust and murder over adultery.
- The first being the triumphs of David.
- The second would be the troubles David had.
- The third would be more of a non-chronological record detailing further the reign of King David.
