Short Summary of the Book of Judges

Randy Jones
Judges: The book of Judges begins as a narrative historical account of the delivered nation of Israel falling back into sin. The book of Judges was most likely written between 1045 to 1000 B.C. The book of Judges can be broken into 2 main genres.
  • The first being of wars and the deliverance of the Israelites over the Canaanites and ending with the defeat of the Philistines with the death of Sampson.
  • The second referring to a historical account of no king.

The basic narrative of Judges would be how the children of Israel for centuries took for granted the Grace of God. In a down contrast to the book of Joshua where God poured out blessings for obedience in victories within the promise land. The book of Judges records their disobedience and idolatry worship resulting in many defeats. Not widely known, the most notable judge in the book of Judges would have been the 12th judge, Samson, he lead the children of Israel after their 40 years of captivity by Philistines. Samson with the blessings of God lead the Israelites to many victory's over the Philistines where he lost his life after 20 years serving as a judge of Israel.
