Shortage of Eggo Waffles Through 2010: I'm Horrified
The Shortage of Eggo Waffles Really Made National Headlines? What's Wrong Here?
Does it really warrant headline business news? This story was displayed on numerous websites across the web.
I read the article and reader comments at several different websites and couldn't believe what I was reading.
I just had to write an article on this Eggo Waffle headline for it just emphasizes the fast food living life style that we are living here in the United States. It's no wonder that a majority of our kids and adults are morbidly obese.
Kellogg Announces Shortage of Eggo Waffles Across The Web:
It seems that the Kellogg Company lost some of their manufacturing space due to flooding and inspectors finding Listeria Monocytogenes in a sample of their Buttermilk Eggos. The Atlanta manufacturing plant was shut down most of September and October and had to recall about 4,500 cases of Eggo Waffles. The two events are responsible for the beloved Eggo Waffles to be unavailable or in short supply though some time in 2010.
I had no idea at the number of Eggo Waffles sold here in the US but their commercials are cute and appealing. More than half of American households consume frozen waffles, pancakes, French toast, etc. Eggo Waffles command 73 percent of the market. No wonder they are upset. They have done a great job of brain washing the consumer and the kids that scream to have mom buy them.
Why Should The Shortage of Eggo Waffles Be Nationally Important?
This means that Kellogg's cute, appealing advertising and marketing programs that have saturated your children's TV programs for years, has been extraordinarily successful! Your love of Eggo Waffles has made the Kellogg Company very rich.
These ads over years have succeeded in brainwashing millions of people into actually thinking it's a great breakfast for your children! For all you Eggo Waffle fans, it's hard to see the truth on a food you have grown to love. You love them and don't care that they are fluff not real food. Some of you really believe the ads. You need to look at reality for your kids' sake if not your own.
Eggo Waffles to be frank are just one of thousands of easy, tasty, convenient food items. Some Eggo Waffle product varieties are better than others nutritionally, but they are still just a convenience food.
It might be better for a lot of kids, if their production was limited indefinitely. Parents I know you love your children so read on in this article for better breakfast options than Eggo Waffles.
Nutritional Information From Kellogg's Own Site:
From their website, Cinnimon Apple Eggo Waffles contain: 4 grams of protein, 22 carbohydrates, high fructose corn syrup, 10 grams of sugar, and very little fiber.
Many of their Eggo products contain only 3 grams of protein and up to 32 grams of carbohydrates as in their chocolate chip waffles.
Aren't chocolate chips considered a desert item?
Is it wise to feed candy to our kids for breakfast?
Why is it, we won't let them eat too much Halloween candy but it's ok to feed them chocolate chips (candy) for breakfast?
Many of the Eggo Waffle products contain high fructose corn syrup, which is one of the factors causing problems of weight gain and food allergies.
What Constitutes A Great Breakfast ?
In order to do well in school children need to eat a solid, nutritious breakfast. Protein is extremely important for children because they are growing. Protein is used to build new bone, muscles, and blood. There are thousands of children right here in the United States, who would not get breakfast if was not served at school. Many children are not eating a suitable morning meal either because of a lack of knowledge, a lack of money, or just being given poor food choices. If you were to go by the commercials, these cereals are wonderful and the best breakfast your child can eat. That is just great marketing folks. Cute and appealing commercials full of Tigers, and other characters brainwash kids and the parents too. Many of these foods are not much better than a candy bar.
The amount of protein a child needs daily varies with the source and expert. According to the Oklahoma Extension University and their nutritional expert, Dr. Janice R. Herman, Ph.D, Rd, Ld a 40 pound child needs about 16 grams of protein a day and an 80 pound child about 32 grams of protein. If you visit the RDA website they recommend 19.7 grams of protein for a child aged 4 to 6 years and about 28 grams of protein for a child aged 7 to 10 years. Research this yourself and then make your own decision on who is more correct.
One fact most experts do agree upon is that breakfast should be the most important meal of both you and your children's day. Children especially need protein for fuel to think, participate in sports, and to grow properly. The quality of the food and protein is important as well.
Better Nutritional Breakfast Choices Than Eggo Waffles:
Eggs contain about 6 grams of protein as well as Choline, Selenium, Folate, Riboflavin, Vitamin A and E, Lutein and more with only about 65 calories. Add wholegrain toast and fruit and this makes a great breakfast that will last.
Whole grain toast with Peanut butter contains 7.9 grams of protein in the PB and 2.6 grams of protein in one slice of bread.
Oatmeal with extra nuts: ¾ cup of oatmeal contains 4.6 grams of protein. Add ½ cup of sunflower seeds (6.2 grams of protein) and some sliced fresh fruit.
Low Fat Cottage Cheese contains over 15 grams of protein per ½ cup. Add some fresh fruit to it as well.
Muesili -2 ounces contains about 7.7 grams of protein.
Yogurt - 8 ounces equal about 8 grams of protein.
Kashi GOLEAN Cereal contains 13 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber. It is made from whole grains and a good choice in cereal.
Go lean Crunch Cereal contains 9 grams of protein and 10 plus grams of fiber
Kellogg's Mini Wheats Cereal contain 6 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber. They are Kellogg's best cereal choice. Read labels because store brand Mini Wheat Cereals often have less protein than Kellogg's brand and taste more like cardboard. There are 12 grams of sugar in Kellogg's Mini Wheats which is about the average sugar content of the Eggo Waffles but with more protein and fiber.
Make Your Own Fresh, Wholegrain Waffles
Buy a waffle iron which costs about 30 bucks at Walmart, then make your own waffles out of whole grain flour. Buckwheat pancakes are wonderful. Making waffles only takes a few minutes and warm off the griddle, they are unbeatable. The simple process is listed below:
When the waffle iron is ready, you pour the mix onto the grid, close the lid and then let it cook. The light will go off when the waffles are done, and you slap them on the plate. It really is easy and not time consuming. You can add fruit to the batter and make IHOP like pancakes that the kids will love. Let the kids help you make them and learn how to use the waffle iron. Instead of high calorie syrup use applesauce or fresh fruit as a topping. You will never go back to Eggos once you have eaten, warm off the grill waffles. You can also freeze them for mornings when you are stressed for time. Your family will love you and the children will learn how to fix a wholesome breakfast.
Since your beloved Eggo Waffles are not available, it is a good time to awaken your taste buds to new, healthy and delicious choices that are better for you and taste great!
