Should You Apply for a Business Credit Card?

Dee Jones
When looking for a new credit card, you'll find yourself faced with lots of choices and options. The one you choose should be based not only on its benefits and features, but on your specific needs. And, if you own a small business, you should consider applying for a business credit card.

Many small business owners who are just getting started use their standard, personal credit card to make business purchases. And there's not necessarily anything wrong with that. But a business credit card offers many added benefits that you could be taking advantage of.

The Advantages of Using a Business credit card

A business credit card can be used by owners of small businesses, and sometimes their employees, to make purchases related to the business. And it is actually very similar to standard credit card. Most offer low introductory rates, airline rewards, and cash back rewards. But a business credit card usually has some added benefits. For example, you could receive special discounts and rewards when purchasing business-related goods and services. You will also have higher credit limit, which will give you more buying power.

Another advantage is that the credit card will have the name of your business on it, which can add an air of professionalism and legitimacy to your enterprise.

A Business Credit Card Can Help With Money Management

A business credit card cannot be used to make personal purchases, which will help you keep your personal finances separate from your business finances. You will also receive quarterly or annual financial reports, which can help you with your bookkeeping, and when it's time to file taxes.

Choosing a Business credit card

When choosing a credit card, consider the different benefits, features, and special offers. Each one is different, and it's important to study and compare them all before deciding which one will benefit you the most. Consider what you will mostly use the credit card for. (For example, will you mostly be using it to purchase inventory, or will you also be using it to pay employees.) In most cases, the one that offers you the most flexibility will be the credit card that's right for you.

While the requirements for getting a business credit card can be a little more rigorous than those for getting a standard credit card, if you own or are just starting a small business, making the effort could be worth it.
