Should Breastfeeding Be Banned in Public?

Is Breastfeeding Too Obscene for the Public? If You Think So, I Believe I Have Solutions

Andrew Berry
When a woman breastfeeds a baby, the babies sucking reflexes are allowing it to take in nutricious milk, which essentially allows the mother to help take care of the baby. But is the act of breastfeeding a baby to obscene for publiic places? In my mind, yes it is. Although it is healthy for the baby, without the proper consideration taken care into the action, breastfeeding can easily over-expose the nurturing mother in the situation. This is where the controversy i the matter comes into play. If you were to see a baby sucking down on their mothers exposed breast, wouldn't you feel somewhat uncomfortable? I know that I certainly would, as I have been in this situation before in public places such as the local mall.

As I said before, breastfeeding is healthy, and it is also normal for babies and their mothers to engage in such action. But isn't other natural actions considered obscene in today's society? Public masturbation, public sex, and public urination are all against the law, and they are all natural, are they not? Public nudity, the most natural of all, is illegal as well, but it is also the most dealt with since it requires us to put a materialistic man-made item to cover us. All of these generally make another person underconfortable, and it is dubbed illegal by our criminal justice system also.

But what can we do to ensure that the mother can properly and naturally feed their baby, while also keeping the comfort of the public around them at bay? I believe I have a few solutions. Babies also need to be changed periodically due to their nature to expell their wastes, like every other person. The changing of a babies diaper is done in the bathroom, a private place so the public isn't exposed to the changing. In the end, the baby gets changed, and everyone is happy.

Another solution I have is to ensure that the mother breastfeeding their baby doesn't expose themselves purposely. In order to do this, they should have to use a blanket, or some other object that is light and soft so the baby is not harmed in any way. Also, since the mothers body is covered, the people around her will not feel uncomfortable, or nearly as uncomfortable.

With these two solutions, I feel that they are both fair ideas to end the feud. The second one allows the mother and their baby to stay in public, but covers the mother, and I believe that is more ideal.

Since there is controversy in the subject of breastfeeding, an agreement in the matter has to be made eventually. Hopefully this enlightens people on both sides of the spectrum to agree on a method that makes everyone feel as comfortable as possible, while also taking into consideration the well-being of the mother and her baby.
