Should You Buy Toys from the Dollar Store?

Jane Vee
Hearing toys have been bought from the Dollar Store, most people cringe thinking of cheap toys and toys that fall apart. Some shoppers will immediately think of inferior products when hearing Dollar Store. Just because a toy is inexpensive does not mean the toys are "cheap".

Frugal shoppers purchase inexpensive items from any store they find a bargain at. Do you want the same quality for less money or do you want to purchase items that are overpriced so people do not think of you as cheap?

Each toy needs to be judged on an individual basis. Everyone has heard of the toy recalls. Most of the items are made overseas. Fisher Price and Mattel have been targeted for most of these recalls. These toys usually are not sold at the Dollar Stores. If they are, they are the same items that are sold in higher end stores. It does not matter where you purchase an item, the item can be cheaply made or be on recall.

Each item that you buy has to be looked at on an individual basis. Most products, regardless of where you purchase them are made overseas to save companies on production costs. This is how the companies make money on products. Most companies do this so each toy has to be individually considered.

Dollar Stores have many plush animals. These animals look as sturdy as the stuffed animals purchased in high end stores. Looking at the stuffed plush animals from the Dollar Stores, one will see most of the stuffed animals have as much fur and as soft fur as the other stores' stuffed animals.

Consumers should also check the seams to make sure the stuffed animal is thoroughly sewn. If the seams are tearing or looked stretched, the stuffed animal is about to come apart. The consumer should also check to see if the seams are sewn together where the parts of the stuffed animal meet.

Dollar Stores sell books and stickers. These are two items that are fairly similar to all the other books or stickers sold. Whether you buy stickers at Dollar Stores or at the high end stores as long as the stickers stick they are all basically the same. Concerning the books, consumers have to check the binding.

Other toys that are good to buy at the Dollar Stores include bubbles, plastic toys, coloring books and crayons. Bubbles are all basically the same. A little soap and water and any one can blow the perfect bubble. The plastic toys have to be inspected to make sure their seams are not cracked. As for the coloring book and crayons, just a quick inspection should prove their worth.

Whether consumers shop at a Dollar Store or a name brand store, they should not be influenced by society's "branding" of cheap or frugal. Either type of store is likely to have recalls and both types of stores sell products that are not made in America. The only difference is usually price.

Local Dollar Stores are Highway 50, also known as Cheney Highway in Titusville, Florida and on 524 across from Wal-mart in Cocoa, Florida.

I agree with Shirley. mIt amazes me that so many people don't understand Economics 101 which requires an eight and one half by eleven sheet of paper. The xyz company manufactured two million units of whatever. They sold all but two hundred thousand achieving more or less a market saturation and having made a good profit it's not worth warehousing the rest. so they dump it. The abc company went belly up leaving a warehouse full of products. this is where the dollar stores get their "cheap" merchandise. Only idiots believe "You get what you pay for!" Maybe, maybe not. You are so right in saying you need to be a judge of quality.

I guess it is the responsibility of the parent is to carefully examine each toy for safety regardless of where they come from. A smart shopper won't be fooled by name brands and high-end stores. Oh by the way, I am cheap and proud of it. I know how to stretch a dollar this way and that and still enjoy life. LOL
