A cable internet connection is going to be faster than DSL most of the time. The speeds in this technology are much better than what DSL currently provides you with. While cable is the fastest, this doesn't always means that it will be the fastest option in your area.
There is one major flaw of cable internet. The more users that are using it at the same time, the slower the connection is going to be. This means that during peak hours like on the evenings, you might experience slow downs. Some companies oversell their service so much that you might not ever get faster speeds.
The advantage of DSL despite being slower is that the speed will always be the same no matter how many users are currently online through that connection at the same time. You will get a consistent connection speed. The disadvantage of this is that the further you are away from the source, the slower the connection will be.
If you are close to the source on an oversold cable network, DSL will be the best. Otherwise, cable typically will provide you with the best high speed internet in terms of speed.
One thing to consider as well is price. DSL tends to be much cheaper. Speed might not be an issue with you if you are not doing consistent video streaming or downloads. Also you have to look at the bundled options as you can get a good deal on your phone or cable subscriptions depending on the companies that you choose to work with.
The best thing to do is to read reviews about your local area as each market is going to be a bit different to decide on what is going to be best for you.
