Do not call your ex while either of you are highly emotional from the breakup. Wait until the dust settles. Give you and your ex time to calm down and get over that anger hump. If you don't wait until the dust settles, the results will be the opposite of what you want. If you're upset, you'll have trouble keeping your thoughts straight. If your ex is upset, he or she will be less likely to listen to a word you say. Situations like this require a "cool down" period. It's important to be patient and wait. Don't just call and assume that the right words will just come out on the fly. Prepare for the phone call. Make some notes and underline the things you want to say. It reestablishes communication and determines which direction you will take with your ex. Don't assume that everything is fixed if the phone call goes well.
