Should I Circumcise My Child?

Private Pen
If your baby is a boy, one of the earliest decisions you will have to make is whether or not to have him circumcised. Because circumcision has been such a widespread practice in this country, many parents are under the impression it is a necessity. They mistakenly believe they must agree to have it done. This is not true. There is no compelling medical reason for routine circumcision. Regular bathing can prevent the same problems that circumcision prevents.
Whether or not to have your child circumcised is a personal choice. Circumcision of the newborn has routinely been performed without anesthesia. Babies are said to not have pain receptors in the tip of the penis at birth up until they are three years old. Some doctors will use a local anesthetic for the procedure anyway. It's generally best to delay circumcision for at least 24 hours after a baby is born. Jewish ritual circumcision is done on the eighth day. There are pros and cons to circumcision, so speak freely to your partner and doctors before deciding which option is best for you.
