Should I Be Concerned About Using Direct Deposit?

Bennie Perry
Although direct deposit is widely used in the United States, there have been little, if any problems, due to the fact that the transaction is totally electronic. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that paper checks are 20 times more likely to cause problems when compared with direct deposit. Most of the time, if a problem is going to happen with your with direct deposit, it is generally going to be more easier to correct than with a paper check.

When it comes to correcting a mistake with an ACH transaction, the procedures are going to be pretty much the same as they would be to correct a paper check. One way to avoid any potential problems is to always communicate any changes to your account, or closures, to your employer immediately.

Is it legal for my employer to make direct deposit mandatory?

The answer to this question is no! As a matter of fact, Federal law actually prohibits any employer from attempting to make it mandatory that an employee be required to have their paycheck direct deposited into their checking or savings account. However, state laws on the subject of direct deposit vary widely, and some States actually allow mandatory direct deposit, while others require that the employee give his/her voluntary consent before this can be done. If you have any further questions concerning this issue, it is recommended that you consult with your individual State Department for clarification.

Because mandatory direct deposit may not always be an option, many employers have implemented a variety of different methods to promote direct deposit to their employees. They have found that if they take the time to educate their employees about the benefits of direct deposit, and to address their concerns and misconceptions, that oftentimes they will experience a greater increase in employee participation.

Many employers use the method of periodic paycheck inserts for those employees who have not yet chosen to use direct deposit as a method of getting their paychecks. This allows the employer to periodically remind the employee about direct deposit, and sometimes these reminders are printed on the paychecks as well. Employers have also been known to offer incentives for employees who sign up for direct deposit, or to any human resource staff member responsible for assisting in the process.

In closing, direct deposit is an efficient, and secure method for employers to manage their employees' payroll, and the method is expected to continue to rise in use and popularity for both employers and employees.
