Should You Consider a Career in Education?

Teachers as Well as Students Benefit from Classroom Experience

Deb Flowers
Have you ever thought about being a teacher? There are many different possible reactions to this question. Some people cringe at the thought of being in a classroom day after day being responsible for dispensing knowledge. Other people see teaching as a noble way to spend a life. Here are some reasons you should consider a career in education.

Lifelong Learning

A good teacher is always learning--new techniques, new concepts, new technologies. If you enjoy the challenge of tackling new ideas, teaching may be for you. Often the best teachers are the people who were bored by traditional classroom experiences. They are the educators who explore interesting ways to engage students in learning.

Making a Difference

Most of us want to leave this planet knowing that we made a difference. What better way to accomplish this goal than inspiring and preparing the next generation to meet the challenges of the future? Think back on your own school years. There is probably one teacher who is fondly remembered as the one whose class you didn't want to miss--the one who took note of your special interests and talents. Or maybe you were impressed by a teacher's enthusiasm for her subject. Perhaps your special educator was the one who pushed you to do more than you knew you could do. A teacher has the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy of learning with those who sit under her instruction.

Various Opportunities

There are myriads of settings in which to teach. There are the conventional elementary, middle school and high school classrooms. There are community colleges and universities. Many students take advantage of on line classes. Those who specialize in the arts can teach private or small group lessons in a studio or at home. Tutoring is another option. Local community organizations such as shelters for displaced families or troubled teens often employ teachers. If you enjoy travel and experiencing different cultures, you could apply for teaching jobs in other countries. Wherever there are people, there are opportunities to teach.

If you love to learn, get excited about making a difference for others and desire to work in a field that offers endless opportunities, you should consider a career in education.
