Should You Get a Dachshund for a Pet-The Pros & Cons

Reasons for or Against Getting a Pet Dachshund

Don Levy
Dachshunds are one of America's favorite breeds because of their cuteness, their energy, and their affectionate nature. They are a popular breed and have a comical and genuine personality. Before you decide on a pet Dachshund for your family, it is best to consider whether this is the dog breed for you. Let's look at the facts to be considered.

Pros:

• The Dachshund is loyal to his owner. Once you adopt a pet Dachshund, you have a faithful companion whose devotion will never waiver.

• Dachshunds are easy to maintain, needing only, for the most part, the occasional bath, a walk each day, fresh water and food (natural and home made if possible).

• This breed is really quite intelligent and the extra time it takes to train them will be worth it.

• They are playful and will enjoy retrieving tennis or similar balls.

• They like physical contact with humans, so if you like a lap dog, or allow your pet in your bed, a pet Dachshund is definitely a good choice for you.

• Doxies are fun to watch and will bring a smile to your face every day.

• Dachshunds are a small breed, which makes them portable, and able to live in smaller homes and apartments.

Cons:

• Being long and low, they can have problems with their knees and backs.

• The manner in which they are "picked up", jumping and climbing can all result in back problems, so the family needs to learn how to handle Dachshunds. You should also dissuade them from any high jumping.

• You need to watch their diet closely since gaining too much weight can cause physical problems for this dog especially with their backs. It could also cause their stomachs to drag or bump on the ground.

• They are strong-willed hunters, so training can be challenging. They can be stubborn & you will need more patience than with some other breeds.

• Dachshunds adore their families and their tendency to be protective can possibly make their behavior with strangers or guests unpredictable.

• Being inveterate hunters, other small pets in the house will have to be protected (hamsters, rabbits, etc.).

Even with all their cons I think you will find the pros outweigh them and overall, the Dachshund makes a wonderful pet. They not only bring joy into the home but your attention and care is reciprocated in many ways. To help insure a long happy life for your pet Dachshund, think about taking care of your pet holistically or naturally. Some of the ways to do this is by feeding them food without harmful additives, be sensitive to their needs and comfort, avoid toxins in their day-to-day life and consider a holistic veterinarian. Our pets, especially the bright, intelligent Doxie, deserve informed and thoughtful owners. If you are looking for a loveable pet, dachshunds certainly fit the bill. Enjoy your loveable "Weiner Dog".
