Should Your Daughter Be a Hooters Girl when She Grows Up?

Memmay Moore

A Hooters waitress recently spoke at a Clearwater, Florida school during the annual Great American Teach-In. Some parents were not pleased.

The Great American Teach-In is a popular event where parents, community members and invited guests speak to local school kids about their careers and hobbies. Firemen, policemen, helicopter pilots and even a decorated Army general have participated.

Hooters is a popular restaurant chain where busty young Hooters Girls serve chicken wing platters with side orders of cleavage, short shorts and an occasional bare belly button..

A volunteer coordinator at the Calvin A. Hunsinger School was having a tough time recruiting speakers for the Teach-In. Since she has two daughters in college who are part-time Hooters Girls, she figured, "Why not tell the kids about food service?"

She called The Hooters corporate office to see whether a waitress would be available. "Anyone can be inspiring, no matter what their job is," she thought.

Hooters corporate office agreed and sent along 23 year old Brittany Morgan who works at the Clearwater original Hooters restaurant. She plans to go to college eventually and become a psychiatrist.

Dressed in conservative slacks and a sweater, Brittany spoke to a class of sixth graders. She told them what a great company Hooters is and how they give opportunities to young women.

She also told them about ordering from a menu and how to figure a tip. She explained about the legal drinking age and how Hooters helps the community.

Some parents thought Ms. Morgan should not have been allowed to lecture since Hooters believes that young women have a right to use their natural sex appeal to get jobs and tips.

Others believe her appearance sent the message that if becoming a food server is all you'll ever be in life, it's OK. Aim low if you want.

What began as a simple idea turned into a national debate about the propriety of allowing a Hooters Girl to address school kids. Talk show hosts, including Joy Behar and Anderson Cooper discussed the controversy. Cooper even invited Ms. Morgan to appear on his daytime show.

Another parent said she could have found at least ten other more appropriate speakers for the Teach-In, if she had been asked.

Anyway, don't bet on Brittany Morgan being asked back. It won't happen.

Second Cathy's comment on health comments not permitted. I would rather have a waitress from Hooters talk to my kids about the responsibility of customer service than the crack addict pushing on the corner. Reminds me of the parents who did not want anyone to speak on birth control or STD, because kids would never consider doing anything if it was never discussed.

Hi, Memmay, excellent question , again. jobs are scarce in the real world and GATI is a popular school program, where the public can come and share their wares with the kids , not a really good choice for Elementary, try Chilli's or Applebees. thanks for a great article .

I'm with Malina and Cathy on this one. Times are tough right now and if waitressing is the only job they can get, so be it. I was a waitress in high school and college and loved it.

Interesting article! I agree that another speaker could have been found, but it sounds as if the Hooters employee did well and was appropriate in her attire, so what's the big deal? She waits on tables; she isn't a prostiture!
