Should You Drive or Fly to Your Vacation Destination

The Answer to This Question Depends Solely on You, Your Family

Jennifer Moore
You and your family have chosen a vacation and now the question remains should you drive or fly to your vacation destination? The answer to this question depends solely on you, your family, and the financial means you have for taking this vacation. The way you choose to travel also depends on how long you will be gone. If you have plenty of time to travel by car then this is a better option. The reason I say this is that it gives you plenty of time to stop and relax. Traveling by car also allows you to see scenery such as mountain's, rivers lakes and more. Around 50% of people who travel do so by vehicle especially if they have a couple of weeks or more of vacation time. This gives them ample time to enjoy vacation and time with family.

If you decide to travel by plane it is usually because your time is limited and this mode of transportation gets you to your destination faster. Flying has its rewards but it also has its downside. The downside to flying is flight delays, lost luggage, expense and jet lag. The only upside I see to flying is getting there faster.

Should You Drive or Fly To Your Vacation Destination

If you are traveling 3000 miles away or further then yes flying is better. If you are going to another country flying is your only option. Especially if it is over open waters because you and I both know you cannot drive a car across water. If you do decide to drive your vehicle 3000 miles away then consider all your options such as time, expense, sleep and the time you have off from work. Decide what works better for you and your family. If you have, a family member traveling with you that has a health issue then you may consider flying versus driving because sitting for long periods can cause stress on the human body.

Another factor you need to consider when flying or driving a vehicle is fuel costs. Will it be cheaper to fly or drive a vehicle? Fuel prices have skyrocketed in the last couple of years and for this reason you need to consider the miles per gallon to and from your destination. Not to mention the fuel price while at your destination. Consider if it will be cheaper to fly and then rent a car when you arrive at your destination. Add up all of your costs and figure out the best route for your family and your needs. Therefore, to answer the question should you drive or fly to your vacation destination depends on all the above factors.

Many times the drive is part of the adventure, the time spent as a family together, and the experiences that we can create on the way - that we might otherwise never had seen or done had we choosen to fly vs drive. However another thing to consider is the size of your car and the age of your kids - that alone would cause you to stay home :) Great article.
