Should You Go to Mexico for Plastic Surgery?

Why You May Want to Think Twice Before Booking Your Flight to Mexico

Jody Morse
In the United States, plastic surgery of any sort is known to be very expensive. Many who are interested in having a plastic surgery procedure performed are unable to do so due to the high cost. If you really want to have a certain plastic surgery procedure, or any other type of procedure for the matter, chances are that you are willing to go great lengths to have it done. One of the alternatives that many Americans are turning to is having a plastic surgery procedure performed in Mexico, where the prices are known to be a lot less expensive. Here, we will take a much closer look at the differences in cost and some of the other things that you should take into consideration before deciding to have a plastic surgery procedure, or any other type of procedure, performed in Mexico.

How Much Cheaper is Plastic Surgery in Mexico than the U.S.?

It is definitely safe to say that plastic surgery in Mexico is a whole lot cheaper than plastic surgery in the United States. For example, a face lift is known to cost between $5,000 and $6,000 in the United States. In Mexico, a face lift costs between $2,000 and $2,500. While a tummy tuck may only cost you about $3,000 in Mexico, you will be likely to pay double that amount or even more in the United States. The cost of a breast reduction is often $9,000 in the U.S., whereas it is only about $2,500 in Mexico. As you can tell, there is a huge difference in prices of certain plastic surgery procedures that are performed in the U.S. as compared to Mexico. This was just to name a few of the prices of some of the many different plastic surgery procedures, of course. No matter what type of plastic surgery procedure you are interested in having performed, you will be likely to find that the cost is a lot less expensive in Mexico than the United States.

What Can Go Wrong During a Plastic Surgery Procedure in Mexico?

Just about anything can go wrong during a plastic surgery in the United States, but it is even more common for something to go wrong in Mexico. One of the main reasons is because doctors who have had their licenses revoked in the United States may choose to move to Mexico to resume working. Such was true with Dr. Callahan from Tallahassee, Florida. His license was revoked and he owed over $20 million to patients due to malpractice and sexual misconduct. Unfortunately, people did not look into his past medical history before choosing to use him for their plastic surgery procedures in Mexico. One woman even died the day after having a severe allergic reaction to anesthesia under his care. Instead of doing research about this doctor, however, the woman was convinced that he was a good plastic surgeon because her relative had a good experience under his care. Persuaded by the fact that the plastic surgeon offered her free airfare and a hotel for four nights with the total cost of the surgery. Unfortunately, she never got to experience the beauty of Mexico through this experience that was meant to be very vacation-like.

It is very common for women to end up with awful results after they have gone to Mexico for a certain plastic surgery procedure. Many of them ending up with permanent scarring, disgusting infections that do not seem to go away long after the plastic surgery has been performed, deformed looking skin or even death. Since many plastic surgeons from Mexico do not offer the same type of post-op care as U.S. plastic surgeons, it is also very common for things to go wrong after you have gone through surgery. If you do choose to have plastic surgery in Mexico, many people recommend you to stay for quite some time afterward - or get near an area where you will be able to visit a good plastic surgeon in the U.S. if anything should go wrong.

While you may think that you are going to have a plastic surgery procedure that will make you look better, the truth is that you may end up looking a lot worse... if you even make it out alive. Many people recommend that you consider paying the extra amount of money that is required in the U.S. or another country where plastic surgeons are very experienced and reputable instead of taking your chances in Mexico. Ultimately, however, the decision is yours. If you are really interested in having a certain plastic surgery performed, nothing is going to stand in your way. Being aware of the fact that things can go wrong is the most important key.

I just have to say, I am THE HAPPIEST girl alive right now. I had a breast augmentation (you can't even see the scars!!!) and lipo. My friend recommended going to Merida, Mexico (the safest city and excellent doctors) so I researched it. The truth is the doctors they (medicatrust) put me in contact with are JUST as qualified as the ones here. The difference is the price, the fact that they TAKE CARE OF YOU and you stay in a luxurious suite!

I had my tummy tuck done in Bolivia on May 2010.

First of all I would like to thank my surgeon and the wonderful support staff of Sensualbodydream (the medical tourism agency that organizes my trip) for all that they have done for me -and my Husband as well- in helping to improve my life.

This agency and their surgeons are life changers. My surgeon has an excellent eye for what he can do to make you look your absolute best, a true artist of the body. I had been contemplating having a tummy tuck and breast augmentation for many years after having my 2 children.

I had gained weight with each pregnancy and worked like mad to lose the added pounds. The 2nd pregnancy was not as forgiving to my body. I was in my forties and my skin did not go back. I had adopted a healthy lifestyle, eating clean and working out daily. I got back to a healthy weight and was strong and fit. However, after a few years I was still unable to get my body into the shape I wanted because of the loose skin and th

This article strikes me as one by a typical white girl who has probably never even been outside of the United States, let alone actually HAD plastic surgery in Mexico.

Most Mexican doctors are trained in the United States and Europe and have experience comparable to that of doctors in the United States. I have known several people who have had either plastic surgery or dental work done in Mexico, all with very positive results.

I hear quit often of American Doctors that are board certified, disfiguring, or even causing death of their patients, I feel just like in the states, if you don't do your research on the doctor you choose the outcome could be a nightmare. Just make sure the doctor you choose has good references, and board certified no matter what country you have a procedure done in.

Very sorry to hear about your friend, Mary. A responsible plastic surgeon in Mexico will not accept a case if the patient's health makes the procedure risky and as patients we should not put ourselves into dangerous situations if our primary physician has advised against it. Ensuring that the surgeon is certified by the Mexican Association for Plastic Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery is a start (www.cirugiaplastica.org.mx).

Leda I was so happy to see someone else from Renewed in Mexico, I had anatomical breast implants done for much less than what I would have paid in the U.S. and by a skilled, experienced, board certified surgeon. Cuernavaca is a wonderful place to recuperate as well.

I agree with Charles, each patient should do their research but the level of care in Mexico is equivalent or superior to that in the US A board certified plastic surgeon in Mexico goes through 12 to 13 years of training and must by recertified every year. The doctors are caring and professional. I traveled to Cuernavaca, Mexico for a lipo and tummy tuck and was so happy with the results I had a breast lift the following year. http://www.plastica-medica.com.mx/Renewed

Jody Morse's comments are the same as the Medical Insurance companies made about Obama's Health Care Reform. Try to scare the public with ghost stories. There are a good and bad Plastic Surgeons in the States as it is the case for Mexico. So it is up to patients to make their own research and choose the right surgeon. Judy Morse' s comments are absurdly general platitudes unfit for a reputable medical care web page.
