Should Helping the Homeless Deserve a Death Threat?

This Lady's One of the Bravest Souls You'll Ever Meet

Donald Pennington
For the better part of the past twenty years Libby Wright has dreamed only of rescuing those 'not worth' caring about.

Her dream has to be the one there for those who need her, in spite of the fact that noone was there to rescue her in her ownpast.

Initially she fed hungry children two decades ago. That led to their caregivers needing food too. She then found herself busy starting a small local church in Tucson, AZ. Soon enough, the poor, homeless, estranged, and displaced came to her for help.

This turned that small local church into emergency shelter for so many who needed protection from the elements that she soon came to understand an iota of what 'God has in store' for Libby and her family.

Her goal is to put a permanent, properly built, safe, and clean emergency homeless shelter.

After merely ten years of trying to reach the peak of that mountain, she has obtained the land to build it on, but after a five year long grant application process, she's been denied the funding to get so many more off of the streets immediately into what she believably calls 'the last set of doors a homeless person need walk through before having a place of their own.'

The irony of all this for this author is that in this tireless, courageous effort Mrs. Wright has put herself through, the local neighborhood association is severely and abusively unfriendly towards her, even to the point of Libby getting death threats (I'm glad she's smart enough to have awesome security...he's the best).

With the treats against her life, the 'sub-political' and political abuses she's received, as well as various and sundry other challenges that Libby's faced daily, I feel it's just time to act to keep this wonderful lady safe.

Here's my plan: If she were to be successful in getting her emergency shelter built, the neighborhood would be forced to recognize her as the force for good that she is.

Gone would be the bickering, negotiations and renegotiations, and slander.

And hopefully then this association would also then see that the riff-raff causing the problems on their turf have never been those who are guests of ours .

As well, here is a soul in need, and deservedly so, of any assistance that those of us who love life, fairness, compassion, decency, and hope of any help we can give. So please check into the reference link about Libby Wright and "The Giving Tree." (4888 E. Broadway Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85711 Or call them at 1-520-320-5437 [KIDS])

While you're there make sure to make any kind of offering whether it be money (1 million people giving only $5 each would build this building right), goods, or services (one or two contractors could probably start and finish this project or at least contribute any types of supplies and we'll build it ourselves). Please at least offer Libby a kind note of support or a prayer.

All donations and offerings...100%...go directly to "The Giving Tree" and not one cent has been paid to me for bringing this item to your attention.

It would also be of significance were you to share this story with any acquaintances you may have. The more awareness of this battle that this brave lady is fighting the sooner I can bring her the help she is needing and deserving. Please just at least help Libby save those babies.

This was a wonderful but sad article. It's sad when home owner need to place blame but have no intention of raising a hand to help. I am flat broke right now but it I had some money I would love to give it to this courageous woman.

Horrible behavior on the part of homeowners association, but it reflects our inverted national priorities.

I'm glad I read this rather than skimmed...thanks for the information, the death threats confound the mind -- I get the red tape and all that and even the sneers -- are people doing this because of property value? Well, there really is no legit excuse.

Thanks for writing this piece. Gotta love those homeowner's Associations, always more concerned about what color your mailbox is or when you last mowed your lawn than helping actual human beings. Perhaps the most excelent point you made here was about hoe Homeless folks cause far less trouble than many of the cretins who come visit the good folks of Harper Valley. On thing I've learned as a youth on the strets of South Knoxville is that the homeless usually wish to remain invisible, and just be left alone, and causing trouble is the last thing they need to bring unwanted attention to themselves. Libby is doing a great thing, and to threaten her with death because of her work is evil in its purest form. Thanks for bringing her siruation to light.
