Being arrested for a DUI is a scary moment. For most people, this is only the beginning of a long process that consists at the minimum of several court dates and substantial fees and fines. Navigating the court system alone is a cheaper alternative to hiring a lawyer, but is it worth it?

Costs of Hiring a Lawyer for Your DUI Case

Let's face it, lawyers are not cheap. On average, a lawyer representing a client charged with a DUI will charge a straight up fee of at least $2500. This does not take into consideration any of the court, motor vehicle, and auto insurance fees and fines you will be facing after your case is tried. While deciding to forego professional legal representation might save you money up front, it may very well end up costing you more in the long run. Representing yourself is an option, though there are some things you should know if you choose to exercise this route:

-You should have some familiarity of the legal system in regards to DUI. There is a wealth of information on the web regarding DUI laws and the legal process.

-You should at get a free consultation from at least one legal professional regarding the specifics of your case. This will help you decide whether representing yourself is a viable option.

-You should be aware of the possible sentences that you could be handed down as a result of your arrest. For instance, if you have been arrested for a prior DUI, it is in your own best interest to seek legal advice.

Pros of Hiring a Lawyer for Your DUI Case

The court system is confusing and having someone to guide you through the process is advantageous. While it may cost you financially, having a lawyer represent you will oftentimes not only make sure that your rights are being protected, but will also make sure that you are aware of all your options and the repercussions. In a time when sobriety tests are commonly administered falsely and evidence is suppressed, having experienced legal representation can ensure you get the fairest trial and suffer the fewest legal consequences. There are some strong arguments in favor of hiring a lawyer to represent your DUI case:

-Having a lawyer will provide you with the greatest chance of having your charges dropped or significantly lowered.

-A lawyer can make suggestions that will aid in the negotiating of your sentence.

-A lawyer is experienced with the court system and the process of going to trial for a DUI crime. They can give you accurate legal advice and protect your rights.

Clearly, it is in your own best interest to hire a lawyer when faced with a DUI charge. If you cannot afford to hire one, there are options available such as legal aid representation, lawyers who offer payment plans and free legal consultations. Going to court with all the legal assistance you can get will only benefit your case and ideally result in the negotiation of the best possible sentence.
