Once your business starts producing wonderful profits, you will begin wondering if you should include your family in your success. Allowing family members into your business circle can have advantages and disadvantages. This decision should not be taken lightly. As a successful business owner, you must wonder if you should keep your business profits to yourself or share it with family members. Before you consider hiring a family member to work in your business, take the time to make a list of pros and cons. Doing this will help you make your final decision.

Don't let your emotions get the better of you. Starting a brand new business is already a stressful situation. Throw family members into the mix and it will increase tremendously. Before hiring your family members as employees, think about their personalities. Do your really know them well enough? Although some family members are laid back under certain situations, you must think about their attitude during stressful ones. Working with family members during a stressful period can either make or break a business. Think very hard before you hire a close family member. Sometimes we expect just a little to much from them in a work atmosphere.

Get it in writing. Although you may not think it is important to write out business goals when hiring a family member as an employee, it is extremely important to do so. This will clearly let them see what you expect of them before they get started. Create a formal list of expectations and make sure that each item is well understood by all parties involved. Doing this will help you and your family member develop a great working relationship without blurring the lines. If your family member has issues with the written guidelines, then make sure you come to an agreement before they start working for you.

Decide who's the boss. This is one of the most important factors of hiring a family member as an employee. Sometimes they can forget that you are the one giving the orders and they should follow. Before starting any sort of work project with them, let your family member know that you are in charge. Advising them that there will be no compromises and they should follow your business rules completely. Set the guidelines at the very beginning of this business relationship and you will not regret the decision to hire a family member for your business. Not taking the time to establish these rules will cause unnecessary stress on both sides.

Choosing to hire a family member to work in your business does not have to become an excruciating decision for a business owner. Problems occur when you do not set up boundaries and let your emotions take control of your business decisions. There are many companies that have prospered because of joint efforts between family members. One of the most important things you should consider is if hiring your family member will be truly beneficial to your business. If it will not be, then look for someone else to fill the position.
