Should You Job Search During the Holidays?

Are you waiting until the holiday season is over to start your job search? The bills for all those Christmas gifts are going to start piling up much sooner than you think. If you are under the impression that the Christmas season is a bad time to start a job search, think again.

Most businesses don't take breaks over the holidays and neither should you. Although those with seniority can take two week vacations during the Christmas season, most will be in the office until Christmas Eve. However, all those executives on Christmas vacation can be good news for your job search. Companies can't stop work just because its Christmas. In fact, many companies find that they need employees to fill in for all that vacation time during the holiday season.

The holidays are a good time to bring your job search to your local temporary employment agency. They will know about all of the available work during the busy holiday season. Looking for something more permanent? Register with them anyway. Temporary jobs turn into permanent ones more often than you may think. And, its generally a good idea to have your resume on file at many different employment agencies. You never know when a job may turn up that you're perfect for. Maybe someone will go to Bali for Christmas vacation and decide that they don't want to come back!

But don't stop your job search at temporary employment agencies. Send your resume out everywhere. Most people stop their job search during the holidays. Like you, they're thinking that they'll wait until the kids go back to school and things get back to normal. Jumping into the applicant pool now means less competition. While everyone else is waiting until the new year, you may have a job by January. And, keep in mind that some companies plan their budget annually so they're looking to hire before the new year.

While you're waiting on responses from those resumes, get busy doing some networking. During the Christmas season, friends and family get together more than any other time during the year. Use these parties to your advantage. Talk to people about their professions and companies. Then mention why you would be well suited to work in a similar field and mention that you are currently between jobs.

The Christmas season is a great time to put yourself and your resume out there so that people know that you are searching for a job. But, after you have done all that you can do, be sure to spend some time enjoying the holidays. Everyone is pinching pennies this year, but things will turn around soon. In the mean time, assure yourself that you've done your part and wait for the rest to come to you.
