Some landscape design software will allow you to import photos of your yard and house so that you can see how the finished product will look after you design your area. While many of the newer landscape software products will show you the 3D designs for plants, objects, and buildings not all of them will show you the 3D design. This would help you if you 3D so you can do a virtual walk through of the finished product before you spend any money on plants and trees. This way you will get a better ideal of how the finished project will look.
Some of the newer landscape software products have where you can add decks, design pools and ponds, gardens, fences into your design project and see how they look in different areas of your yard. This would be a great feature if you are planning to build anyone of these expensive projects. With a few of the software on the market now you can simulate the growth of the plants over the years and see how it will all look in a few years, if you are planning on selling your home in a few years this would be a feature that you would want to have in the software.
Another great feature with software they have a database of plants and bushes, so you know exactly what to pick up at the store and use in your yard. They give you care tips for the live plants and tell you where these plants thrive best depending on where you live.
The most important thing is the cost estimator you can get a general ideal before starting your project what the total cost will end up being. This will help you budget. Most of them also have a shopping list that you can print off to take to the store with you.
If you are planning a major landscape project the software available will help you, and the products that I looked at aren't that expensive compared to most software. It will more than likely pay for itself with the money you save doing the landscaping yourself.
