One of the best ways to determine whether your teenager is ready for a summer is to examine the advantages and disadvantages of letting them have one. What you will then want to do is then apply those advantages and disadvantages to your own personal situation and your own teenager. This little process should give you a good idea as to whether or not a summer job is right for you teen.
As for the advantages to letting your teen get a summer job, you will find that the biggest advantage is the responsibility that they will learn. Whether your teenager works as a cashier for a local retail store or a councilor at a summer camp, you will find that letting them have a summer job teaches them a lot of about money management and responsibility. Although you should let your teenager spend a few of their paychecks, whichever way they see fit, you may also want to help them set up their own checking account or invest the money, should you allow your teen to get a summer job.
Another advantage to allowing your teenager to have a summer job is that you will know where they are at most times. If you are like many other parents, there is a good chance that you also work. This means that your teen, should they not get a summer job, would spent most of their time hanging out at home or around the local neighborhood. While this is more than okay, it is important to remember that times are changing. That is why you may find it comforting to know where your teen is at all times, at least when they are working.
Although there are a number of advantages to allowing your teenager to get a summer job, there are also a number of disadvantages to doing so as well. One of those disadvantages is the transportation. Most teenagers only work part-time during the summer. That can sometimes make for some weird work hours. If your teenager doesn't have their own vehicle, you may find it difficult to get them to and from work, especially if your teen doesn't have access to public transportation.
The above mentioned advantages and disadvantages are just a few of the many to letting your teenager get a summer job. In the end, the decision as to whether or not your teenager should get a summer job is one that you and your teen should make together.
