Should You Marry a Smoker?

Timothy Scheiman
You have met someone but the only problem is they smoke. Should you decide to stay in this relationship or move on? Is the fact that he or she smokes that big of an issue? In this article I list some possible problems that could develop if you marry a smoker. The fact they smoke is it that big of an issue? This article is meant to inform you have to draw your own conclusions.

If the fact they smoke is a big issue to you than it will always be a big issue. Be prepared for some hassles if the person does not want to quit smoking. They may want to quit for you than again they may not. You should just remember that if smoking is at the top of your list of compatible partners than you might want to back off before you get in to deep.

Health risk

Your risking your health from second hand smoke. Unless they agree to smoke outside. This is something you must discuss if you decide to marry this person. Not only are you risking your health so is your partner. We have all heard all the arguments on both sides about smoking and what it can lead to. You could be around them your whole life and never have a health concern. The choice is yours but it is a choice you have to consider.

Cost

Cigarettes are getting more expensive all the time. What you have to consider is how this will affect the family finances. When your married you have to take care of each others needs but a habit of smoking is not a need and should not be a requirement of the non-smoking spouse. If the smoker has no means of income this can cause problems. If they decide to continue smoking they must pay for them. Before you say "I do" there must be an agreement concerning the cost of smoking.

Intimacy with a smoker

If one partner smokes and the other doesn't it does affect intimacy. Kissing a heavy smoker is like licking out the inside of an ash tray. There body and clothes will reek with the smell especially if they smoke more than 1 pack a day. It can affect the marriage bed so you must keep that in mind. Lets face it but kissing a smoker and your a non-smoker leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Mood swings

Many smokers that I have met in the past seem to suffer from mood swings. I don't have any facts and figures but nicotine seems to cause some depression. Its no wonder they prescribe some anti-depresents to help people stop smoking. I have noticed mood swings in many smokers and sometimes doesn't matter if they are low on cigarettes. The more they smoke the more the need. Of course if smokers are trying to quit their mood swings would be off the charts.

When it comes to marrying a smoker these are some of the things you will have to contend with. If you don't have some type of agreement than maybe you should find a non-smoker to marry but the choice is yours.
