Should No Child Be Left Behind?

An Argument from a Christian and Biblical Perspective

Jared Moore
The State's educational system believes that all children deserve to have the same opportunities, regardless of income, grades, etc. It teaches that "no child should be left behind". This view sounds Christian at a glance; however, it actually holds back those who are more-gifted by God's provision, and sets the bar too high for those God hasn't gifted due to no man being able to add to a person what God has left out. The State acts as if all children are the same in ability and giftedness, and education is the answer in making them "realize their full potential". Teaching children to use their giftedness to the best of their ability is God-honoring, and must be taught; however, telling children they can go beyond their own ability is to teach them to envy and covet. If it's not present in them from God to learn and understand certain truths, then it cannot be placed in them. Ability is God-given, not given through evolutionary process. Not everyone can be like Einstein. Not everyone can be rocket-scientists. Not everyone is PhD material. The reality is that Christians should teach their children to use their giftedness, regardless what society thinks about their vocation, for God's glory alone. A ditch digger, just like a medical doctor, should do his or her job for the glory of God with the ability and skill HE has provided! Vocations must begin and end with God's provision in mind.

Parallel to the Atheist Worldview, many Christian parents have bought into the improper view that the State is to educate their children. However, this is not consistent with a Christian worldview. Christians are those who have turned from their sins, turned from believing they can save themselves from God's wrath, and trusted in Christ alone by faith alone to receive God's grace. Persons who do this simultaneously receive God the Holy Spirit, and are made new creatures in Christ. The apostle Paul explains how these Christians are to view education in 2 Corinthians 10:5 writing, "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." Christians must seek to take every thought captive to the glory of Christ. If our children are being taught Mathematics divorced from the Creator God, then they aren't being taught to take every thought captive to the glory of Christ. They are actually being taught to have an inconsistent worldview, a mixture of an anti-Christian and Christian worldview, which actually is a sinful worldview. It's the equivalent of thinking like a Christian about "church things", while thinking like an Atheist about everything else.
